156.98How could Edith's obituary appear on the tricorder?DOOSJE::HERTAFor something fulfilled this hour, loved, or enduredWed Jan 29 1997 15:2736
BBC broadcasted this episode again last Friday, and I'd like to come back to
the question David Mikkelson brought up in .82:

How could the tricorder contain two versions of Edith's history?

1. I had the impression that the Guardian stopped showing history right after
    anyone stepped through.
2. Even assuming that it kept on showing history just a little longer after
McCoy stepped through, or -- as David Iron suggested in .83 -- if they
asked it to show history again twice before stepping through,
it should not have shown the car-accident, because that history no longer
    existed.
3. To forestall the multi-timeline argument: if the Guardian had actually
been showing multi-timelines, there should have been infinitely more
timelines to show, i.e., all the timelines that would result from whatever
actions Kirk and Spock undertook (Did Spock's appearance trigger the
stories about green aliens? What happened to the guy whose clothes were
stolen? What happened to the people who couldn't get the jobs that
Kirk and Spock were doing? What would have happened had Edith broken her
neck had Kirk not caught her? etc)

Re:.53 (Velvet)
> "Assignment
> Earth" would also support this because Kirk (or Spock) said that
> history recorded the bomb being detonated at 103 miles above the
> earth exactly as it had been with Kirk's interference.

True, but they found out about this *after* the event. I.e. in the time
line they were now part of. They could not know for sure that it also
happened that way before they went back in time. At best, when they
return to the 23rd century, they may find that things are (slightly ?)
different from what they remembered, but even that cannot be taken for granted.
As someone else pointed out, before the facts, Spock knows about the launch,
but does not mention the detonation. Hardly like Spock, is it?
