| If I remember the name correctly, our aged mare was treated for
Cushing's Disease for about 8 months. She took some kind of long-
winded name drug that was supposed to help her avoid skin infections
and other reactions caused by high steroid levels.
Last Spring she developed a bad respiratory infection and the vet gave
her a steroid shot for it. When she recovered so nicely, we decided
that maybe we should discontinue the medication and let the steroid
problem take care of itself.
Since then she has been doing nicely and has shown continued
improvement and so far she hasn't had any skin infections. She seems
to have adjusted to the problem or maybe she was misdiagnosed.
Who knows... good luck with your appy.

One of my vets, Lori Tumpowski at Tufts [she's the ambulatory vet]
gave a speech on caring for the older horse a couple of years ago
and she spent a lot of time talking about Cushings. She basically
said the best treatment is to make sure your horse is getting the
optimum care, ie good food, good worming schedule, teeth in shape,
etc. You may need to body clip your horse in the spring because her
body will not know to shed out.
We have a 34 yr old pony at our barn with Cushings and she is still
an active lesson horse .She seems to have achy joints when she is
not used.
Don't despair, horses with Cushings just seem to need more care but
it doesn't seem to threaten their overall health. You should be
able to find lots of reading material on it.
Good luck,
Sherry
