1983.0. "New Forest Ponies" by UBOHUB::NORRISV () Fri Aug 04 1995 13:39

    My little Sister has just brought a New Forest foal, he is
    18 months old and stands at 12.1, can anyone tell me roughly how big he
    is likely to get at full height??

    I'd guess he'll stand about 13 hands when full grown; perhaps a tad
    more. Take a look at his Mum & Dad. He'll probably be about their
    size. I remember looking up some info on formulas for such things
    based on parents' height in Willoughby's book. Try Note 1879. I think
    that's where it was. I know there's some info there on estimating
    height of young horses from there current height & age(also from
    Willoughby)

1983.3no real help hereDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle:Life in the espressolaneTue Aug 08 1995 17:4916
    I checked Willoughby's book to see if he had different
    growth charts for ponies. He didn't. While I was in the "library"
    (read somewhat disorganized shelves and totally disorganized stacks of
    books), I looked up New Forest ponies in 2 of those all breed guides. One
    said average height was between 12h and 14h. The other says average
    height is about 14.2h...I have no idea which one is right.

    Since my own experience is limited to horses, it might not apply but
    I based my estimate of 13 hands on the fact that he's 12.1 hands at 18
    months and the foals we raised grew 3" - 4" between that age and
    maturity. 13 hands is also consistent with Willoughby's growth charts
    which suggest that equines of all breeds would have reached slightly
    more than 93% of their mature height at 18 months.

    Short version is he shouldn't be smaller than 13 hands and might reach
    14 hands if ponies grow at slower rates than horses.
1983.4another little question!!UBOHUB::NORRISVWed Aug 09 1995 08:4217
    Hi,

    I have a feeling he is going to get no bigger than 14h,
    His mum was said to be 13.3h and his dad 14h, I am not to sure if they
    were both pure breed New Forest however.

    He is coming on quite well, but seems to shy at drains...any ideas how
    to get over this?? My sister Kelly is only 11 so I am having to do all
    the work at this stage!! and I have never fully raised a foal on my own
    before so it is a learning experience for me also....

    Any help would be greatly appriciated!!!

    Thanks,

    Vikki

    At the risk of repeating myself, please do see Note 1879. Raising a
    foal for the first time was the general discussion there. Also look
    over the notes referenced in the topic index under the NEW_FOAL_INFO
    subjects(Note 4.147) and NEW_OWNER subjects(Note 4.148)

    Other keywords that may possibly be of help:
    	FOALS(Note 4.77)
    	TRAINING(Note 4.218)

    Have fun

Vikki,

	I was given "Mr Bean" when I was 12 yrs old and he was only
	6 months.
	He doesnt like "drain" or the dreaded (mum they are going to get me)
	plastic bags"

	All I can say is continually working with him, I spent loads
	of time talking to him getting him used to me talking ,letting him
	know that he can trust me and all that I do with him wont hurt him

	He is so good , I rode him to church on my wedding day ( 15 july 95)
