1897.0. "Name Help!" by CHEFS::ELKINL () Mon Jun 06 1994 10:46

I am currently registering my palomino mare in the British Palomino
Society but meed to come up with a new name as there is already a
"Holly" on their register. I would appreciate it if you could put your
heads together and think of a few names. She is obviously a palomino,
is 13 years old, very loyal but also crafy and clever.

I have so far thought along the lines of cocktails or translations of
appropriate names/words in foreign languages. To date:

    Tequilla Sunrise
    Pink Gin (or Lady)

I'm not up to date on drinks and would appreciate some input.

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I've no idea who she was from. I purchased her from a riding
stables 1 1/2 years ago, they named her Holly as she was bought at
Christmas time 6 years ago. Up until now I had no reason to rename
her although I have wanted to do so for some time.

Please keep them coming, I like the previous one.

    Thanks

What kind of riding do you use her for? If you were into
hunting .. you could call her Holly Hunter :-)

    	(sorry, could not resist) :-) :-) :-)

Tequilla Sunrise is one of the most common horse names around...I
personally know 4 of them. :-)

If you like it, though, what about editting it a little? 'Tequilla
    Gold' maybe ?

My favorite name of all time is Serria. I think a lovely
palamino named Serria would be beautiful.

    Hi,

Thanks for all your contributions, it's been difficult but.... Hello
Dolly as first choice, Tequilla Gold as second and hopefully I won't
have to give a third option as I don't think either of the above will
be listed already. If I do then it's back to this conference for
inspiration!!! The lady registering her is coming out on Saturday so
it's fingers crossed and hope that she "qualifies" as a true palomino.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

1897.17Tough test, good luck...KERNEL::PCIOF2::CHEWTERTue Jun 14 1994 16:038
Qualifing as a 'true' palomino for the society is a VERY TOUGH TEST,
please have ready dyes ie, i hope there are no ginger hairs in mane or
tail! they will really put her through it.

Good luck

Jayne

Jane, I think you're the first local to reply to me in this note!!!
When I booked the inspector to come out this Saturday she said to me
along the lines of "She's not chestnut is she? (the horse!), I said no
and she replied it should be okay. The Palomino guidlines state:

A true palomino should be the colour of a newly minted gold coin with
dark skin and only white markings on the legs and face. The eyes must
be dark with a white mane and tail - there should be no more than 15%
dark hairs" - that's the bit I'm worried about, she may have just over
the amount of dark hairs permissible.

I'm getting more and more anxious about this as Saturday draws closer -
I'm praying for nice weather as the mane and tail have to be freshly
    washed.

I'll keep you posted on if we get there!!

1897.20Yippeeeee!!!CHEFS::ELKINLWed Jun 22 1994 07:4826
Oopps, sorry for not updating you.

Yep! I am now the proud owner of "Hello Dolly" although I'll always
know her as plain old Holly. The lady inspecting said she was boarder
line but as she is 13 there is little chance of her changing
dramatically now. Ooh it feels good to know she is registered as
something and not just my dobbin.

On a different subject, I thought I would let you know I am trying to
trace the history of her. I know the riding school where she came from
but they bought her in 1986 at Xmas from a dealer at Reading market
(UK). I have placed an ad in a horse magazine this month and had a
call from a lady in Stratford-Upon-Avon who thinks this is the same
horse they had at 0-3 whom they ar trying to trace. Anyway, I have
phoned the people that this lady sold to and then where she went after
this and the dates tie up. I have since sent her more photos and I
think she's coming to visit this weekend to have a look. If it is the
same horse then her dam was a Highland (little stocky wooly thing) and
her sire a race horse whom in his time came 2nd in the derby.

My little dobbin is full of surprises. I'll keep you updated on how
it goes and if she is the same horse.

    See you

    Liz

    Hi,

I thought the name was v. original and liked the "removing the middle
part" to leave her name There's a particular word which descirbes this
but I can't remember what it is.

Yep, you'd be more than welcome to see her if you ever come over for a
    visit.

    Thanks again
