1770.0. "Quarters/Halves" by SALEM::ROY_K () Mon Jul 12 1993 20:06

I have been working on Showmanship with my 3 year old for
several months now and he is getting pretty good.

What I was wondering is what system people use at the open shows, the
Quarters/Quadrant or the Halves (more commonly seen at Open shows).
At the breed shows you show Quarters. You used to show halves at the
open shows. I have always been hesitant to show quarters at the
open shows because some judges that don't judge or show at
breed shows, know what the quarter system is and think that you are
    wrong.

I was looking for some input.

    Thanks

    Karen

    Hi Karen....

I always show quarters, I think it looks better. Will I see
you on the 25th? SAlly says you're entered in the futurity
    	in August.

Would someone mind trying to explain what you folks mean by
showing halves and quarters. I've never heard those expressions
before, but that may be due to being the 'other side of the water'
     	(a UK reader).

Hi Michelle, I won't be showing at the futurity, I haven't registered
my horse with Pinto yet. Must be the other Karen Roy. It gets
confusing with two of us. Good luck, if I get a chance I will be going
to watch. I have a baby shower on Sunday.

The best way to define the Quarter system is to divide your horse into
4 quarters. A line lengthwise from the middle of his poll through his
tail and then across his girth. This would create 4 quadrants to show
to the judge. If the judge is behind the girth line you are standing
on the same side as the judge. If he is in front of the girth line you
are on the opposite side of your horse. The halves would be where you
would always be on the opposite side as the judge.

    I hope this helps.

Hi Karen ....if you are interested, they will be doing incentive
registrations at the New Boston show (July 25th). I'll be there
for the weanling class if I can be certain there will be other
weanlings (It's a long trip to be the only person in the class).

The last time I went to the Pinto show in Spencer (several years ago)
they had 4 judges and they had a lot of weanlings in the halter
classes. I just remembered that I went two years ago and I think there
    were 4 colts.

At last months show in Spencer, there was one filly. THe class ended
up being combined with the yearlings (and the filly got 2 or 3).
