1748.0. "A Foal's Age" by MTWASH::DOUGLAS () Fri May 28 1993 12:45

    Moderator, please move this if there is already a file on
    it. I searched the keywords, but could not find anything on this.

    My TB mare is due to foal late this fall.

    My friend and I are having a disagreement as to the foal's
    age on Jan 1 1994.

    Since it will be born in 1993, will aready be a year
    old on 1/1/94 ??

    My friend says that she will not turn 1 year until 1/1/94.

    She says that they breed TB's to have the babies late fall,
    and I say that they breed TB's to have the babies late winter
    early spring (Jan-Feb).

    How old will my foal be on 1/1/94 ?

1748.1Jan 1 "birthday" for all t'bredsKALE::ROBERTSFri May 28 1993 13:0512
    Your foal will be 1 year old on Jan 1, 1994. All thoroughbreds are
    considered to be yearlings in their second calendar year.

    Most breeders try to get foals as early in the year as possible -- late
    winter, early spring. Although it has been shown that even fall-born
    foals will eventually catch up with their brothers and sisters born
    earlier in the year, this doesn't happen until they are well into their
    second year. Since most breeders make their money at the yearling
    sales, they want their yearlings to be as big ans impressice as
    possible.

1748.2Northern hemisphere?DECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Fri May 28 1993 18:0310
    Assuming you're in the Northern hemisphere, a foal born ANYTIME in
    1993, upto and including Dec 31, will be 1 year old on Jan 1, 1994.

    This is true for all racing and most show purposes since the AHSA uses
    the Jan 1 date as the universal birthday too.

    I believe that the Southern Hempishere uses June 1 as the universal
    birthday because their seasons are the opposite of ours(i.e. Jan 1 is
    their summer so Spring born foals would actually be 3 months or
    younger)
1748.3IS IT TRUE?WOTVAX::REESLLynda ReesMon Jun 14 1993 13:043
    Is it true that TB horses D.O.B go down as 1st Jan, but that
    unregistered horses go down as 1st May?

1748.4Is what true?KALE::ROBERTSMon Jun 14 1993 13:318
    The date of dirth on the registration certificate for a thoroughbred is
    the actual day the foal was born. When you ask if the dates of birth
    for "unregistered horses go down as 1st of May" I'm not sure what you
    are asking. "Go down" where? If they are unregistered, it can't mean
    registration papers... Or did you mean registered in some cross-breed
    registry or other?

1748.5Usually Jan 1stDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Mon Jun 14 1993 18:332
    For show purposes, the AHSA considers Jan 1 as the "official" birthday
    of all breeds/divisions as do most registries.
