The IEHA is working in conjunction with Sergei Gridfai, Vice Consulate
of the Russian Consulate General's Office in San Francisco.
The Russian Warmbloods are starving to death and going to slaughter.
There are only 400 horses left. They are found only in Russia, excel
in dressage and jumping, and were used by the USSR equestrian team.
The Russian Equestrian Team veterinarian issued a desparate plea to
help save the last of this breed. The IEHA and the American Minor
Breeds Conservancy are trying to import genetic representatives and
maintain the breed in this country.
For those of you with enough money, this could be an opportunity to
import and world class horse at a comparatively low cost. The horses
are coal black, range from 16-17.1 hands, refined and elegant in
appearance. According to the article, they are considered some of the
finest sport horses in the world and are one of the foundation stocks
from which all European Warmbloods developed.

| Well, I talked to Kris Bobo last night and Carolyn Christman today, and
got the inside scoop. Details of the import will be worked out in
April, but it looks like 150 horses will come to the U.S. and 150-200 will
remain in Russia. There are mostly breeding stock, a few competition
horses and some young stock. The U.S. agencies are trying to convince
the Russians that some private sales will be necessary to help support
the breeding operation, but the Russians want to maintain ownership
and tight control of the horses. The reason is because in recent months
there has been a large influx of Russian Warmbloods into Europe,
especially Germany, and the Russians are upset about this.
This squares with what Kris told me yesterday. In fact, she is off to
Germany today to look at some Russian Warmblood competition horses that
one of her students has already pre-screened. Kris said that the
horses are gorgeous, usually black, very smart yet sensible. She
thought I would like them especially because they are lighter and more
refined than the other warmbloods. Carolyn sounded like she thought
that the best possibility at this point for private sales would be some
of the young stock. Since the sales are to help support the
importation, my guess is that they will not be bargains. Oh, well!
