1644.0. "Starting horseback riding as an adult vs a child..." by BOOVX1::MANDILE (Riding off into the sunset...) Mon Jul 13 1992 13:10

One of my horse magazines has been running a series on
riders who start late in life.....(Didn't start riding until
    they were an adult..)
One rider wrote in to say he had started at 52! I found this
a very interesting series of articles, mainly because I didn't
start riding (seriously) until I was 27. Also, the woman who
is leasing my horse is an adult beginner, and she was telling
me about the lessons she had been taking, and how the instructor
ignored her and pretty much *assumed* she knew things, and spent
most of her attention on the kids in the class.

Anyone else start as an adult, or have any ancedotes to pass along?

    Lynne

One of my side saddle books has an anecdote of a woman
who never rode until she was either 60 or 80, but they
popped her in a side saddle and she's been great at it!

I started riding seriously last November (48 years). However, I had
ridden for a number of years on and off. I will own or partial lease
    some day.

I didn't start riding seriously until I met my wife. I was 32. I have
started taking lessons, and we now own 3 Tennessee Walking Horses. I
hope to try jumping at some point, but I am not a good enough rider yet.

The lessons have helped my confidence alot.

My husband started at 43 when he bought my first Christmas present
(a new horse of course, he got two) has loved pleasure riding ever
    since.

HOWEVER is viewed as a kid my a neighbor who asked if she could
kindly ride with us one day. She rode in England in her youth. We
decided to have her join us for a trail ride a couple of weeks ago.

A proud woman, Ms Kay Hinkley, is 92.

We had a nice afternoon and a pleasant ride with Kay.

I didn't start riding until I was 23. Three years later, I'm still
bouncing around, but I know I'll be good at this someday!! :-)

1644.8Riding cures baldnessGRANMA::JWOODWed Jul 22 1992 17:4718
I've always dreamed about horses, day AND night. I even rode (trail
rides) throughout childhood and into adulthood. My vision of myself was
Roy Rogers galloping Trigger across the open plains; reality was "get on
and try to stay on". Pony rides were a regular event for all 5 of our
children over more than 20 years of parenthood.

Finally, at age 44, I bought my first horse. Actually, he was a
Chincoteague Pony (3 month old foal) bought on Pony Penning Day in
1987. Finding him boarding got me started riding regularly at age 45.
Of course one horse wasn't enough nor was boarding. We bought land,
built a house and barn, fenced 5 acres, joined 4H for the kids ;} and
    moved.

As you can see, my dreams came true and I still think I'm Roy Rogers.
And the cowboy hat covers up my bald head!!!
