1564.3Essex, Radnor and Fair Hill 3 Days on Sports Channel???ASD::MCCROSSANWed Dec 11 1991 10:2214
	Hi,

I thought I read in the Chronicle that the Essex, Radnor and Fair
Hill 3 day events were being televised during the months of
December and January on Sports Channel, but I can't seem to find any
listings in the TV Week (from the Boston Globe Sunday paper) for them.

Does anyone know if and when these are being televised? If you have
listings, could someone please post them here?

	Thank you in advance!

	Linda

Essex and Radnor were on tv (SportsChannel) this past Saturday and I
think Fair Hill is coming up sometime.

The T.V. Guide carries a more comprehensive description than the

I was over at a friends house last weekend, watching a tape of Radnor,
and I noticed that they offered tapes of 5 1991 events for sale. So I
  wrote the details down:

VHS video tapes $24.95 each event, or $99.95 for all 5 tapes.
  Events available:
	Millbrook Prelim
	Fair Hill CCI
	Radnor 3-Day
	Checkmate CCI

Last night (Wednesday, 25th) turned to Sports Channel on Tv @ 7:59,
I say the ending credits for a Horse Competition that I would have
surely loved to have seen. It doesn't appear that this program will
be repeated. There is so little Equestrian coverage that I hate to
    miss a single one....

Did anyone out there in horsey land tape last nights program...
If so, may I borrow it?

Do we have a subject file for informing noters about up and coming
    televised events?

If you look in the begining of the TV guide, they list all of

1564.13Equine events Jul 26-31 '92DECWET::JDADDAMIOMay the horse be with you!Wed Jul 22 1992 20:0918
Next week is "hog heaven" for equine sports on TV! In addition to the
Olympic 3-day event coverage on NBC and Pay-Per View TV, Sports Channel
is having 2 showjumping tournaments from Spruce Meadows as well as a
couple CCI level 3-day events from earlier this year.

The Spruce Meadows coverage includes the Queen Elizabeth II class which
is similar to the Hempstead Derby.

I caught the coverage of Checkmate CCI last night on Sports
Channel/America and it was pretty good. It will be on most of the
regional Sports Channel stations next week. The other CCI that I can
    recall is Essex.

I also noticed coverage of an event in Dublin, Ireland but I can't
recall what it was for sure. I HOPE it's the Irish National Horse Show
    because that's great stuff.

Check your local listings for your favorite stuff.
1564.14Equine Coverage on TV? No changes!DECWET::JDADDAMIOMay the horse be with you!Fri Jul 24 1992 17:5821
That reminds me. If you're as disappointed with the amount and quality
of equine programming on TV, especially network TV, I've got bad news!

There was an editorial in The Chronicle a few weeks back. It seems the
editor had been to a talk given by somebody knowledgeable in TV. The
short version of the talk is:

Don't expect anything to change in the near future. The networks can't
and/or won't take the financial risk for equine coverage. The cable
companies can only afford to broadcast equine events because they are
heavily funded by coprporations. That means that we'll get to see what
Budweiser, Volvo, Shell, Rolex, Crown Royal and other corporations
think will sell their products. It also means that the overage will
look like one long commercial for the sponsoring corporation.

There are a few independent producers who make programs like the
Checkmate CCI coverage or the Spruce Meadows weekly magazine format
show about showjumping. These independents peddle their stuff to various
cable companies but most of the stuff on cable is done by the network
    and heavily funded by corporations.

When is the even from Dublin -- I didn't see it in my local listings.
But, all I had was the listing from the newspaper, since my cable

1564.16Saturday. On PRIME(I think)DECWET::JDADDAMIOMay the horse be with you!Mon Jul 27 1992 17:1518
I checked my Satellite TV Week and it says that it is the Royal Dublin
Horse Show that will be on TV this Saturday, Aug 1. The Nations Cup
competition will be 7-8 PM Eastern with the Grand Prix aired from
8-9 PM Eastern. That I'm sure of. I'm not as sure of the channel but I'm
pretty sure that it was on PRIME network and its affiliates. NESN
sometimes shows PRIME events so if you get NESN you can check their
    listings for that time.

This isn't a tout for satellite dishes but a friend of mine who lives
in Cambridge says that he pays over $120 a year to get ESPN through his
cable company. I pay $26.50 for ESPN on satellite. I also pay $55
dollars a year to get 3 network stations, an independent and a PBS
station; $8.50 per year each for PRIME, Discovery and A&E. All of
which I am told are cheaper than cable prices. The Sports Channels are
free at the moment. That $100+ a year that we save over cable prices
goes a long way towards justifying the expense of a satellite. Of
course, we can't get cable out in the boonies anyway so it's a moot
    point!

re .16: Hmmm, I live in Cambridge and pay $19 per month for 50

pronounce Norman Della Joio's name correctly (not that I can spell it
    correctly, either).

1564.19Quien sabe?DECWET::JDADDAMIOMay the horse be with you!Thu Jul 30 1992 17:1415
You spelled it right!(I think!) Maybe my friend was confused. He might
pay $19 per month for everything and only watch ESPN...Come to think of it
that sounds like him! Who knows?

On the other hand, I called a satellite programming service this week
to see about getiing The MIdwest Sports CHannel from Minnesota because
they were having a 3 day CCI that nobody else was carrying and they
wanted $8 PER MONTH for that one channel(Needless to say I didn't get
it!) So, who know's about comparative shopping?

I just subscribe to the sports channels that have lots of horse stuff.
That way I can tape whatever the have and watch it when I'm not riding,
cleaning stalls or here at the office.

1564.21New TV show endorsed by USETDECWET::JDADDAMIOWhen in doubt, cop out!Mon Apr 26 1993 19:2231
Prime Sports Network(NESN, PRIME, PTN, HTS, etc) will be broadcasting
the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase this weekend. They plan a 90 minute
broadcast which will include the Virginia Gold Cup(one of the top 2
timber races in the US) and 2 other races from the same day of 'chasing.
Last year's event was wonderful! We don't get very much 'chasing on TV
in the US. Just this, the British Grand National and the Breeder's Cup
Steeplechase(if we're lucky! our local NBC affiliate didn't broadcast
the BC Steeplechase 2 years ago!). If you get Sports Channel NY or NE,
you might get some steeplechase races from Saratoga too but that's it!
The Virginia Gold Cup broadcast is scheduled for 3 PM-4:30 PM Eastern
on Saturday so it'll be over in time for the KY Derby.

Speaking of the KY Derby, PBS is again broadcasting a series of
pre-race shows on the build up to the race. It's called "Dawn at the
Downs" and airs daily this week. My schedule shows it live at 7 AM
(Eastern) with a taped replay at 8 PM Eastern. Check you local listings
though. Last year, our local station had the replay at 11 PM.

The April 9 issue of The Chronicle of the Horse claims that "Coming
Soon to a TV Network(to be named) Near You" includes a new equestrian
series. It's supposed to be a weekly show hosted by Karen Stives(3 day
eventer; Team Gold and Individual Silver at '84 Olympics). It's
supposed to include up-close coverage of major competitions, interviews
with outstanding riders, features on top horses, etc. The show is
endorsed by USET which, along with a 3 day rider as host and a 3 day
rider as co-producer, suggests that the show's orientation will be
towards Olympic disciplines. Hope they include more 3 day and dressage
than we usually get. By comparison, there's a lot of Grand Prix
showjumping on ESPN and SportsChannel(and Canadian Networks if you can
get 'em). Not counting the Olympics, I've only seen 2 dressage
competitions and half a dozen 3 day events on TV in the past 3 years.

I was watching TV the other nite and I believe Channel 11 (NH Public TV)

diane
1564.24DECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Tue Jul 27 1993 20:1912
Don't know about NH PBS station but we got next week's satellite tv
guide last night. It lists the Lexington 3 Day several times (mostly on
Prime network affiliates which would be NESN in New England). I'll
double check because I *think* it may also have been listed as showing
    on PBS.

BTW, next week is "busy" with horse events. In addition to the
Lexington 3 Day, there were several other competitions. Full report
tomorrow as I can't recall details right now.

Doesn't Channel 11 send out a monthly listing magazine to its members?
I'm sure that would have their schedule details for the whole month.
1564.25Lexington and other events next weekDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Wed Jul 28 1993 21:5823
I checked my tv listings for next week and the other station that was
showing KY 3 Day was SportsChannel Pacific(i.e. San Francisco). It's
showing on Tues Aug 3 on Prime Sports Network affiliates(e.g. NESN,
KBL, HSE, HTS, PRMN, PRMW, PRNW, SPTS, SUN, etc) and SportsChannel
Pacific on Tues Aug 3 at 4 PM *EASTERN* time; 3 PM Central; 2 PM
    Mountain and 1 PM Pacific.

KY 3 Day will repeat on Saturday at 2:30 Eastern. I think that EMPIRE,
another Prime affiliate picks it up then too. Some other affiliates are
broadcasting individual repeats in addition to the repeat by the block,
so check you local listing if you can't catch one of the 2 I mentioned.

The Oakbrook Grand Prix showjumping will be on SportsChannel New
England and Chicago on Mon Aug 2 at 4 PM local times. For those in the
Chicago area, it's also showing on Sunday at noon and Monday at 5 AM

Next Saturday(Aug 7), ESPN will air the junior showjumping
    championships.

There was also a listing for the Grand Prix of Chicago on one of the
PRIME affiliates for sometime next week but I can't remember which
station or the day, so check your local listings.
1564.26Lexington 3 Day coverageDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Thu Aug 05 1993 21:1818
Did anybody find out if there was any Lexington coverage on PBS?

I saw the Prime Sports Network coverage and was disappointed in some
ways. First of all, they spent as much time doing touristy propaganda
for the state of Kentucky as they did covering the event. Secondly, the
dressage phase coverage consisted of a montage of 3 second clips of a
number of unidentified rider/horse pairs. Thirdly, the coverage of the
XC phase of endurance was limited to the last half dozen or so
    obstacles.

On the plus side, it was fairly well done. They didn't get into the
sensationalized coverage of falls for which NBC has such a penchant.
The footage was well shot. The commentary was reasonably good. They
did some educational bits for those who aren't familiar with 3day
by having the male commentator ask the female expert commentator questions
that might come to the mind of the uninitiated.

    John
1564.27Yes, pretty good Lexington coverage!ADSERV::HOOT::WILPOLTFri Aug 06 1993 14:1645
Yes, here in New England, the NH PBS station ran an hour or
an hour and half covering the Rolex event pretty well. I
was pleasantly surprised. I suppose my expectations were low,
considering the poor quality of hte commentary, etc, on the
Olympic coverage. This coverage and commentary was MUCH better.

I may have missed some of it, but I recorded most of it. They
had two decent commentators, lots of clips of competitor's
statements about their dressage test, or the x-c course, etc,
and some clips of the vet, the course designer, etc. All in all,
I was really pleased, and when they posted the phone number to
call in for comments for the local station, I called in to tell
them I was happy with it.

They did a lot of editing to keep the action going. They showed
most of the top competitors' dressage tests first, going from one
to the next quickly, and occasionally showing the competitor being
interviewed in one of the corners on top of the rest of picture.
Then they showed quite a few competitors going x-c, but they
didn't show every fence-- still, they probably had good shots of
more than half of the course. They were complete enough to be
able to tell us when (once) someone had gotten a refusal in a segment
that wasn't filmed, and they told us this before she finished the
course.

They even showed when an interesting competitor after x-c didn't pass
the vet check! (I won't spoil it by telling you who, for those who
haven't seen it yet) Never having been to a real 3-day, I was delighted
to see this, even if it was just to show the judges watching him being
trotted out and back (it was a little hard for me to judge his
movement from the camera angle), and then all shaking their heads,
conferring and making the call.

Same for stadium as for dressage-- but I wasn't 'keeping score',
so I don't know how consistent they were about who was being covered.
My only little nit about the whole thing (I'm sure someone else will
come up with a few!) was that they showed the winner (gee, does anyone
not know that yet? one might guess!) with the Rolex
for something like a full minute, being photographed and smiling.
I'd have given the ceremony about 30 seconds, and then showed
competitors cooling out their horses or something. But then, I'm
not in the sports-coverage business, huh?

KCET (PBS station in Kentucky) has covered the Rolex Three Day Event at
the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington for several years (>5) now. They
seem to have got the hang of covering eventing although they do change
the format slightly from year to year. The commentators tend to be
different each year but generally include a known eventer. It will
depend on your local PBS station as to when of if the programme is
shown. As noted in the last reply New Hampshire Public Television
(Channel 11) showed it twice last week. I have it all on tape.

I happened to catch the Nations Cup portion of the Dublin Horse Show on
SportsSouth (which I think is our version of SportsChannel). It was
the one where the American team was Michael Matz, DD Matz, Anne Kurzinski
and Leslie Lenahan. Leslie's clear round won it for the Americans.

I happened to notice that Digital was a sponsor with a large add
visable from one line of the jumps and the logo was posted with each
score. Good for us!

Also, can anyone out there tell me what happened to the Greg Best/Gem Twist
combination? I noticed that now Leslie is riding Gem Twist and you never
see Greg at all. Just curious.......

Greg Best hurt his shoulder in a fall (can't remember exactly when) and
will not be able to ride for a year, so Leslie got the mount on Gem
Twist. We saw on TV the first competition that Leslie rode Gem Twist in
and Greg was there with his arm/shoulder all bandaged up and in a
sling. I think this was towards the end of last year because they
wanted to keep Gem Twist competing as he was the leading jumper at that
time. From that timing, it appears that it may not be too long before
Greg is able to ride again.

Best injured his shoulder last year and has been out of action since
then. Leapin' Leslie took over riding Gem Twist in late summer or early
autumn of 1992 and has been riding him since.

Personally, I think Gem Twist goes quieter and better for Lenahan. He
swishes his tail and bucks a *LOT* less for her. He still shows lots
    of exuberance though!

Thanks so much for the update. I was wondering what happened to Greg and
hoped he wasn't out of the picture for good.

I agree that the horse seemed to go better for Leslie, but I still hope
to see Greg Best ride him again.

Also, I noticed that George Lindeman, Jr. has been showing up in more
and more of the European and Canadian shows. Is he totally out of the
American shows because of the accusations of abuse?

1564.37Must be nice to be rich...DECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Tue Sep 28 1993 16:1914
According to commentary on Canadian TV, Lindemann has been showing in
Europe from late Spring until the Masters Tournament at Spruce Meadows.
At one point, the Spruce Meadows commentators said that he had been
booed so much in the US because of the allegations that he had killed
horses for insurance money that he decided to spend the season in Europe.
This served 2 purposes: 1) He took less personal abuse and 2) he gained
valuable experience in international level competitions.

Interestingly enough, he came back with a new string of horses many of
which already had international experience. One of the most notable is
"Genesis" which had been ridden by Tina Cassan last year as a member of
the British team in several Nations Cup events. Genesis has all the
power and talent in the world. If he can't make a rider out of
    Lindemann, no horse can!
1564.38Endurance event on TV next weekDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Thu Oct 14 1993 18:3412
    Any endurance riders out there?

According to our latest TV listings, there's a broadcast on PRIME
Sports network next week of a championship endurance event. Prime
Sports affiliates include SportSouth(SPTS), New England
Sports Network(NESN), Home Team Sports(HTS) which is the D.C. area I
think, Prime Sports Northwest, Prime Ticket(PTN) in CA, etc

So, if you're interested, you might want to check your local listings.
Right now, I can't even remember what day it's supposed to be on.
If I remember, I'll check our listing and see if I can give you a
    starting place.
1564.393 Day on TVDECWET::JDADDAMIOSeattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31Tue Nov 30 1993 16:5517
3 day events are infrequently seen on TV. However, there are TWO being
    aired this week.

One is scheduled for tomorrow(Wednesday Dec 1 1993) on ESPN at
2 p.m. Eastern Time, Blenheim Horse Trials (I wonder what they were
    accused of doing! ;-)

I'm not familiar with that particular event so I'm not sure how recent
it is. My listing says that it's the 1992 competition but that could be
    a misprint.

The other is on SportsChannel and/or Prime Sports Network. The TV show
is called "Event at the Downs" and it's listed at various times/dates
this week and next. You'll have to check your local listings.

This is an event from New Mexico. We watched the show last year and
it was an hour of decent coverage.
1564.40I went to "The Event at the Downs"!ELMAGO::HBUTTERMANTue Nov 30 1993 17:3326

The "Event at the Downs" was wonderful...!! (What we saw, anyway).

Last fall I 'happened' to see an ad in a local horse paper that
there was a 3 day event in Santa Fe (only 50 minutes from us) so Jud
and I packed a lunch and headed up. Turned out to be a VERY well
organized and attended event. Held at "The Downs" (a racing facility)
outside the city, they *REALLY* did it up. This was apparently one of
the last in a series of "Young Riders Competition" that had taken place
on the West Coast and was open for riders under 20 years of age. They
were incredible - and obvious candidates being watched for more serious
competition (the Olympics?). Soo there were about 20 of these riders
competing and then another 60+ horses competing at the different
    levels.

The cross country course was tough and long... We only went on Sunday
so we didn't see the dressage and stadium jumping.. but these riders
were clearly first rate. Bet it will be worth watching!

Now.. If I only lived in a place where they had cable.. I thought where
we lived in Maine was the only place that didn't..

oh well. Enjoy the rides, and the sights, it is a pretty area.

    Re; .39

The Blenheim Horse Trials is a CCI*** and this year had many
international riders taking part. Blenheim Palace is the home of the
Duke of Marlborough, birth place of Sir Winston Churchill and is quite
a good location for a three day event. Located about ten miles north of
Oxford, about an hour's drive from DEC Park in Reading.

In the interval between European DECUS and the European Electronic Mail
Association Meeting I was in the U.K. and went to all four days of the
"Audi Blenheim International Horse Trials" as it is formally called.
Most of the big name riders were there including Mark Todd, Matt Ryan,
Bruce Davidson, Ian Stark, Ginny Leng, Karen O'Connor (Lende), Marina
Loheit (German champion). Unlike previous years, the weather was fine
for all four days including cross country day (when it historically
pours with rain). The cross country course includes a particularly good
water complex which only gave a few riders, including Missy Rasenhousen
    (sp?), problems.

I took about four hours of video tape. The TV crews mostly covered cross
country and stadium jumping, having only one camera for dressage. It
was a very closely contested horse trials with less than five points
(one rail down) separating the top four riders coming into stadium
jumping. The TV folk will have to screw up badly not to make it an
    interesting show.

Blenheim? Oh well, it was worth watching even though it was over a year
    old!

Re The Event at The Downs....

    I hope Holly's note didn't mislead anybody into thinking it's just a
bunch of teenagers competing at that event. While there were young
riders this year and last, it's not restricted to youngsters. There
were some national names there(e.g. Mike Huber who is president of
USCTA and certainly not under 20) and it is an advanced level event.

Good point of clarity John... thanks. In fact, when I read the

1564.481994 Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event VideoLUDWIG::SSHEAWed Jul 13 1994 14:0916
Did anyone happen to tape the 1994 Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event that was
shown on channel 11 (PBS from Durham, NH) last night (Tuesday the
    12th)?

I thought I was taping it while we were watching it, but I had not
checked the VCR properly and had it set to record from the front
jacks, not the TV input so I have an hour and a half of nothing.

I had told some friends of ours that couldn't get home in time to watch
it not to worry, I would tape it and let them borrow it (ooops). So now
I need to get myself out of "trouble" and get a copy.

Let me know if you can help.

Hey, guess what? There are more showjumping tournaments on TV during
the week Sun Oct 8 - Sat Oct 14. Some are from the Spruce Meadows
Masters tournament held in September. However, there also 2 Nations
Cup competitions from Europe. One from the Aachen, Germany
tournament and the other from the Royal Dublin Horse Show. What's
interesting is that the SportsChannel NY and SportsChannel
Philadeplhia affiliates are included this time. They're the 2
SportsChannel affiliates that show the fewest number of equstrian
events.
