1446.0. "Rein safety" by XNOGOV::LISA (Give quiche a chance) Mon Apr 08 1991 11:52

    I found this in my daily paper - thought others might be interested.

    Taken without permission from the Daily Mail.

    About eight riders a day are believed to be involved in horse-riding
    accidents. The danger to adults and children who don't wear hats and
    ride on the roads is obvious.
    Another common risk is injury to the hand while leading the animal. The
    medical journal Injury describes eight cases in which people leading
    horses damaged a thumb or fingers when the animal panicked and pulled
    hard and suddenly on the reins.
    Prevention is easy, say doctors. The reins should always be held - and
    not wrapped around the hand.

    Pretty obvious stuff really, but I hadn't thought about it!

    Lisa.

1446.1Never wrap a rope around your hand.GENRAL::LEECHNEVER assume anything.Mon Apr 08 1991 19:0517

    When I was in 4-H one of my leaders was trying to load a horse in a
    trailer. In the process of trying to get this horse in, she went and
    ran a long rope from the halter up around the front divider bar and
    then back out the trailer where she held it while she stood behind the
    horse and tapped it with a whip. Somehow the rope got wrapped around
    her hand and thumb and when the horse pulled back the rope tightened on
    her thumb and pulled it off of her hand. She ended up in the emergency
    room and where they finished amputating the thumb.

    NEVER wrap a rope or reins around your hand. Even the calmest horse in
    the world can spook when being led and you can end up minus a few
    fingers.

    After reading the last one about the 4-H leader, I guess I was lucky
    when I only broke a finger!!!!

1446.3Not to mention you could kill the horse.LEDS::HORSEYTue Apr 09 1991 18:386
    That is no way to load a horse - if the horse spooks it can break its
    own neck. You can't winch a horse into a trailer.

    However, with babies that really don't want to get on (or, twice, off)
    a trailer, I have been able to turn them around and back them on or
    off, and once they are in place it doesn't seem so spooky to them.
1446.4ALWAYS wear gloves.......DUCK::GILLOTTWWed Apr 10 1991 07:298
    I think another thing to remember is (I know this might sound
    obvious) but ALWAYS wear gloves when leading/loading a horse
    into a trailer/lorry no matter how hot it is. Gloves will take
    most of the wear and tear instead of your bare hands, and will
    prevent rope burn.

    Re .4 - and use a cotton rope to lead and to tie.
    Nylon burns like a son of a gun, and doesn't break easily.

    I have break away ties in my trailer, and don't allow anyone to tie
    with their own lead shanks. I also hate to haul a horse that's not
    wearing a leather halter, I've heard too many horror stories of horses
    getting hung up in trailers I guess.

    It's hard to get this into the kids heads as to how much danger
    they put themselves into when they are holding the lead wrong.
    Just this weekend when my daughter and I were giving the horse a
    bath, she somehow got her finger caught in the lead rope chain.

    After telling her the story of the 4-h leader, I don't think she'll
    do that again! ;^}
