1330.0. "Training the western foal." by SALEM::LAURENCELLE () Wed Aug 15 1990 16:23

    I have a loveable Tobiano colt who is (6) months old. He is
    registered Pinto and can be registered Paint (when I can afford
    the fee to the breeder).

    This is my first "baby" and I am in sad need of training books
    or tapes for the Western colt. And what is the best way to sell
    a foal to a "show stable"?

    He is halter broke and good with his feet. Just doing a lot of
    work with leading and commands now. Mostly common sense stuff.

    Appreciate any information you can share.

    Where do you live/board your colt? What does he look like (color,
    and how much?). Who is the Sire and Dam?

    If you plan on registering him Paint, I suggest you do so quickly,
    because the fees will go up $10 October 1st. If you are interested in
    knowing what they are now and will be in the future, write me and I
    send you the fee schedule. And I wans't sure by what you meant by
    `fees to the breeder'?

    Are you planning on keeping your colt or selling it?

    Michele

1330.2Do you show?SALEM::LAURENCELLEWed Aug 15 1990 21:2415
    I live in Mason N.H. near Townsend Ma. I have my own small farm
    so he lives at home. He is bay & white tobiano with white tail and
    mane. His Sire is Tarryton's Sonny Bar and his Dam (my mare) is
    Dakota's Bandit. Long story behind fee with breeder, bottom line
    is whether it is worth it or not to register him Paint if it costs
    me an additional $150.

    Selling or keeping, I would like to sell him if I can get a reasonable
    price and a "good" home. He is a good natured, loveable guy and
    where he goes is important to me. I believe he will be a great stallion
    some day, (I sound like his mother), Besides I don't feel I can
    train him properly and that's a real waste.

    If all of the above doesn't work out I will keep him and do my best
    to make a fine horse out of him.
1330.3If he is good, do it!PFSVAX::PETHCritter kidsThu Aug 16 1990 14:0615
    If $150 is what it will take, I would find a way to do it. If he
    truely is stallion material, you will get the money back, if you
    sell him or use him for breeding. Waiting will make it much more
    expensive, I have a ten year old mare that would cost $500 to register
    with the association that her parents are registered with. Her breeder
    registered her with a smaller, less known registry, so I cannot use
    her for breeding or showing with the more well known group. You cannot
    go back and do it later sometimes. I have been unable to make contact
    with my mares breeder, so I can't register her now even if I wanted to
    spend the money.
    Your baby sounds really pretty, raising babies can be very rewarding.
    There are many good books and trainers to help you raise him yourself
    if you want to. They are brats for the first four years, but you know
    what you have then.

1330.4Pinto? Paint?MASADA::PIERCEThu Aug 16 1990 17:406

    What is the dif between Paint and Pinto? I allways thought it was
    the same thing? I have a Pinto..well after this note I think he
    is a pinto

1330.5He's good, you're right!GUNSTK::LAURENCELLEMon Aug 20 1990 21:128
    Thank you for the input. I have had several discussions lately and
    they all agree with you. I plan on sending in his paperwork this
    week. Don't know his future but he is a good colt with a great
    temperment and easy to work with, just enough "heart". Looks like we
    will be going to school together for a while.

    Any good books you could recommend?
                                           Amy
1330.6It's not the Color.GUNSTK::LAURENCELLEMon Aug 20 1990 21:176
    I could use extra support from the "experts" here but I believe
    the main difference is in the proved "Quarter Horse bloodlines"
    that qualify a spotted Paint. I don't believe a Reg. Pinto has to
    have Quarter Horse background.

    Any American Paint Association Members out there?
1330.8TRY THIS BOOK!DISCVR::FENDELANDERTue Aug 21 1990 19:596
    A good book I would recomend is BREAKING AND TRAINING THE STOCK HORSE
    by Charles O. Willamson. I have used this book to break 3 horses.
    I love it. It is very easy reading and step by step instruction.

    Good luck,
     Robin
