1234.0. "help! horse wont drink water" by FLOWER::PIERCE () Thu Apr 19 1990 12:21

    I guess this note should say "You can lead a horse to water, but you
    cant make him drink"

    I have a 25 year old Pinto Gelding. I have had him for 3mo..but I have
    known him for 7yrs. I knew the previous owner very well also. Joey
    (the horse) has allwasy drank 2 buckets of water down at night. and
    since I have moved him to another barn he will not drink. At frist I
    thought it was going from paddock to a 4 acre pature and he was getting
    alot of moisture in the grass..but he was still eating his hay in his
    stall at night (1 flake) and still no water comsumption.

    So I bought electrolights (sp) and put them in is water and in his food
    and still it did'nt work..Joey wont even sniff the water. So I went
    into the house (they have a water perifcation system in the kitchen)
    and I thought Id give it a try..sure enought he drank 1/2 of the bucket
    alot more then nothing at all..

    I cant keep going into the house for water..I thought Id try to wet his
    grain with a cup of bran in the food to and keep putting the
    electrolights in the food..so at least he will be getting moister to
    push the food throught his system

    Do they make some kind of powder or drops that I can put in is water to
    pureafy it? kinda like you do for fish tanks??? but safe for horses?
    He must drink...please help..summer is coming and he can dehydraete
    very fast.

    Does he have access to water in the field? My gelding went through a
    stage of adjustment when I moved him (went off his feed - lost a lot
    of weight, didn't seem to be drinking water) - and since he is in his
    late teens, I worried.

    For awhile I added one tbs corn oil to grain, scoop of electrolytes in
    his water( - I took him everywhere last summer, and this helped disguise
    the water. Some people suggested using molasses), and some salt. He
    started drinking his water at nite. He has access to 2 streams which I
    see him drink from regularly - so I don't worry so much anymore. (plus
    he is back on his feed)

1234.2Mine's weird about water, too!BOOVX2::MANDILEThu Apr 19 1990 13:2815
    My gelding won't drink from the bucket in the stall unless
    it's the only water available all day. And then he will
    only drink no more than 2/3 of the bucket. He waits to get to
    the outside muckbucket I use as a watering tank. Same water,
    both are cleaned and changed regularly, but Mr. Fussy wants
    to drink outside only. He will even clunk the muckbucket
    by kicking or mouthing it, and toss it around if I don't fill
    it up quick enough to suit him. I had two brand new water buckets
    in his stall when I first brought him home. He would only drink
    out of one, and left the other untouched. I tried the muckbucket
    filled & placed in his stall, and he would drink it down no problem?

    Silly creature!

    Is the new bucket different? I have seen horses refuse to drink out
    of rubber buckets if they are used to plastic. Mine are used to rubber
    and don't like plastic buckets. It doesn't smell right. It could be the
    barn water smells like clorine where the filtered water does not. A
    possible solution would be one of those charcol filters for the tap put
    on the hose when you fill his bucket. He's like me, I like the water to
    taste good too!

1234.4Mine like it outsideLANDO::AHARRISThu Apr 19 1990 14:204
    My horses also have a strong preference for water from outside buckets.
    This even means going out in the pouring rain to drink outside, even
    though there are two full buckets in the stall. (But no matter where
    they drink they ALWAYS come inside to pee!)
1234.5COKE IN THE WATER?ASABET::NICKERSONKATHIE NICKERSON 223-2025Thu Apr 19 1990 15:0510
    Our 30-year old won't drink when he is in his stall but will drink
    outside from the stream and water trough. He has lived in the same
    place for the last 10 years.

    In addition some folks will add a little coke to disguise the water. A
    number of my friends do it for their show horses as they travel so
    much.

    Good luck...things will work out.

    Thank for the replys..at least Im not alone. I called the vet and she
    said that a horse wont kill them selves and she seems to think that
    when it starts to get warmer and he will sweat he will drink more. but
    she does want me to keep putting 2 buckets in the stall one w/ good
    water and one with the normal water and keep switching sides with the
    buckets..so I'll try and i will try the molassus on the insides of the
    bucket...the bucket is the same as his other one...I just dont know..
    i jsut want him to drink...I'll keep you posted on him

    Thanks for all your notes...it did help

1234.7switching buckets around may not workGEMVAX::FISHERThu Apr 19 1990 18:5512
    My horse has two buckets exactly the same. They were bought at the
    same time, at the same place, the whole bit. We can switch those
    buckets around all we want -- he still chooses the same one all the
    time. However, when it's hot and he's thirsty, he'll drink out of
    the second one if the first one's empty (only after he has complained,
    however). I'm with the vet -- he gets thirsty enough, he'll drink
    what's in front of him. By the way, mine too would prefer to drink
    outside, even dirty water when he has nice clean water/buckets in his
    stall.

    Good luck,

    We have a big quarter horse that doesn't drink nearly enough water
    and ends up colicing at least once a year. We now soak his grain
    in water before giving it to him and at least he gets water that
    way. It also seems to have diminished the amount of colic he gets.
