| The Tots-in-Tandem saddle is a special saddle designed to fit 2 riders,
a child and an adult. The adult sits slightly behind where one would
sit in a conventional saddle and the toddler/child sits slighty ahead.
It uses a standard english girth, leathers and stirrups (for both
riders). The original saddle is treeless but one with a "short" tree
(like those used in exercise saddles) is also available. It was
developed by Naomi Johnson and is distributed through her company,
Johnson Saddlery Co., Inc. (phone number is 919-875-4444).
For a history on the saddle and its development see EQUUS issue
111 (Jan. 1987) or send me mail and I'll xerox the article for you.
Its cost is $375 for the treeless and $450 for the one with the tree
excluding fittings but including a foam pad.

| I ended up purchasing a Tots-In-Tandem saddle after my (now 3 yr old)
convinced me he *really* enjoys riding with me. It was quite
uncomfortable for the both of us in my regular saddle (english) so
I *invested* (I have an 11 mo old daughter I hope to get up there with
me some day) and purchased one. I've used it 2 times now and I think
it was well worth the money. Bryan is quite comfortable as am I
and he loves the little *handle* ( a sturdy leather strap) for hanging
on. We have not tried to canter just yet but he is becoming quite
comfortable with a sitting trot. I don't have irons for him yet as
I had to backorder them and he doesn't really need them he just wants
to be like Mom. He rides with a bicycle helmet and his K-Mart special
hiking boots and we have a great time on the trail.
I purchase the model with the modified (short) tree and like it because
I can mount without the aid of a mounting block (although the
literature provided with the saddle discourages this). I put Bryan
up first and then I mount behind him.
It's a rather strange looking saddle, like a cross between a bareback
pad and saddle, but it does the job.
If anyone else is thinking of purchasing one I'd be happy to let
you try mine.
