1068.0. "Horse Racing in Central Mass?" by VMSSPT::PAANANEN () Tue Sep 26 1989 15:02

There was a story last week in 'The Landmark' a small paper local to
the Holden, MA area which had the title:

"Racetrack proposed for Sterling on Kristoff land"

The Kristoff land is part of the area that was badly damaged by a
tornado earlier this year. They lost the top half of a beautiful old
barn on the corner of Rt 140 and Legg Rd.

Here a are some excerpts from the story:

"Walpole developer Louis Petrozzi said on Monday he has a purchase
and sales agreement for $10 million to $15 million on the woods and
farmland presently owned by the Kristoff family of Sterling."

"The property comprises 450 acres in Sterling, about 70 acres in
Holden and about 30 acres in West Boylston."

"Petrozzi said he is gathering a group of five or six Massachusetts
businessmen, some with experience in race tracks, to finance the
project under the name Sports Ventures, Inc. He declined to name
    the investors at this time."

"There are no specific plans at this point, said Petrozzi, but a
tentative proposal calls for a 40 to 60 million dollar track facility
... It would operate year-round, with thoroughbred racing from May
thru October and harness racing from November thru April. ... as
well as housing, dining and recreational facilities for approximately
300 trainers, stablehands and other track personnel."

"Suggestions for the remaining acreage include an equestrian center,
walking and jogging trails and a health club."

R Wheeler - Could that be Ruth form Berlin?

I am all for the Track in Sterling...Does anyone know if they will have
    the QH races?

I have heard alot of talk on TV and Radio concerning the track but I
have only heard the negitive side. I have not heard how much it would
improve the horse farms in the area or how it can teach the children
how to work and care for animals. The only nice talk I hear is about
the golf course. Don't get me wrong a golf course is nice but so is a
    nice track.

From what I've read about the track, it will be used for
thoroughbred and harness horses. They (the developers) have
a long way to go before it becomes reality. I for one, would
be looking forward to seeing one in central mass. I own harness
horses, live in Sterling Ma. and have to race in N.Y., N.J., and
Maine. It would be great if Mass. could get a race track. Heaven
knows they could use the revenue.

    Hi Stan,

I saw your colt, Corporate Money racing at (I think) Rochester Fair
a couple of weeks ago. Looks like you'll have a good one there
    next year!!

Linda, you're one up on me. I haven't yet seen him race. He now has
three life time starts and has finished 4th in all 3 of them. He's
only 3 yrs old and should be getting better with age and with more
racing experience. We may have to let him go for I don't think he'll
be fast enough for the Meadowlands in N.J. this winter. He'll make a
good horse for someone who is planning on racing in Maine next year.

News on a replacement for Suffolk Downs...

Among those reportedly interested in building a new Thoroughbred track
in Massachusetts to take the place of Suffolk Downs is Benjamin Simeone,
who is proposing to construct a track on 225 acres of land he owns in
Wrentham, 35 miles south of Boston. Simeone is involved in the stone
and road construction business. His track, King Philip Downs, [?huh?] would
have a capacity of 5,000, with part of the property to be used as a
training center.

The plan is contingent upon passage of off-track betting legislation in
Massachusetts. Simoeone plans to work with Wrentham officials to
formulate such legislation once proper permits and zoning regulations
are in place. The land currently is zoned for industrial use. Simoeone
speaks in terms of a "racing system," emcompassing the track and a dozen
off-track betting parlors throughout the state.

Simeone already has had several discussions with Ladbroke, the
British-based international conglomerate that expressed interest in
leasing Suffolk last year. Plans would call for Simeone to bring in
Ladbroke to operate the track and betting parlors. The track could be
completed in 2 1/2 to three years. Simeone received support from the
Wrentham community at a selectman's meeting on Jan. 9, when he formally
introduced the plan.

There also has been talk of refurbishing the Standardbred track in
Foxboro, closed since 1986, to accomodate Thouroughbreds.

Rockingham Park in New Hampshire posted significant gains in attendance
and handle on Jan. 6, its first Saturday without competition from
Suffolk, which closed Dec. 30. Rockingham's attendance was 5,204 and the
handle was $797,518. Ont the same day last year 3,113 patrons wagered
$474,221.
