919.0. ""Foal-shower gift"?" by CGVAX2::BARBATO () Mon Apr 17 1989 16:43

My instructor's mare just had her first foal; a lovely
58lb. Holsteiner filly. I want to get something for
them but haven't the vaguest idea what a newborn needs...

The only information I know is this; it is the mare's
    first (she's 19!) and the owner's first (she's not 19!).
Therefore, I don't think they have a lot of stuff from
    say a previous foal.

I know that she has received a halter for the new one as
well as a lead but don't know what else.

Any ideas from all you folks into this sort of thing...
what does one REALLY need. Cost is not to important.

    Thanks,

I think this is a great idea. Let's see a stall name plate,
Perhaps a blanket (for next winter)
A foal feeder (they'll need it before
                                                   long)
A gift basket would be a good idea,
and in it you could put a curry,
                                     brush, carrots, hoof pick, and
                                     some other small inexpensive gifts.

What a novel idea. Now I wish I had a friend with a foal.

What a nice idea! How about a 'horsey' toy of some sort. Or a
name plate for a halter. A gift certificate to a local tack shop
would come in handy. Have you taken any photos of the new foal?
Maybe a good picture blown up and framed - this makes a good gift
for anyone who has a favorite pet.

Speaking as a "mom", I think a brass nameplate for the stall
door is a GREAT idea. A halter plate is a nice idea, too, but
it would have to get switched from halter to halter. I also
like the photo idea -- I took a picture of Gracie's first filly
(my first also) when she was only about 10 hours old and had it
made into a poster. It's one of my favorite pictures.

Now its my turn, a friend at the stable I work, her mare just had
a beautiful colt, 1/2 arab, palomino! What a doll! I think
I'll try the blown up picture, or even an 11by14 in a mat w/plastic
    for the stall entry way.

I'm taking tomorrow to go down and photograph and spend some
    time with them!
