768.0. "Broken Tendons.." by KERNEL::CHEWTER () Fri Nov 04 1988 11:58

    Advise needed...

In April my mare had a very nasty accident, in which she
broke the tendons in both back legs. One of her hind legs
seems to be healed (I can only tell from the way she walks
and places her hoof down etc), but the other leg does not
look good.. The hoof basically clicks into the correct
position from the weight of her body(If you know what I
mean, its very hard to explain!).

I don't at this time know whether I shall ever be able to ride
her again, because even with her own weight she trips up, and
    stumbles.

Has anyone ever had a horse with tendon problems or even
broken tendons? and what was the outcome?

I love to hear your views etc...

    Jayne,

I think what you mean to say is bowed tendons, not broken tendons.
A tendon is more like a muscle than it is a bone, and is encased
in a packet that when overly stressed, the packet breaks and the
tendon pops through. This is a very painful situation for the horse
as you can well imagine. Has the vet seen the horse? What did
he think? Depending on the severity of the bow, with the proper
rest, they will calcify and not be a problem to the horse. My
competative trail horse bowed a tendon and I gave her 14 months
off and she healed fine, and it hasn't bothered her since.

    Good luck.

sorry maybe I should have put that her tendons, have been severed,
obviously the vet has been visiting once a week, since April.
His opinion is that she is very luckey to be here today, he, like
myself does not know what end the scale she will be, whether broadmare
or riding horse. I should have also explained that the legs had
a large puncture wound on both, one healed fine, the other was pulled
open more which resulted in a very large hole in the leg the size
of a hand, or more. The situation is made worse, due to the fact
the wounds are on her fetlocks, which are being continuosly moved.

The vet also explained, that the horse could not be kept in a confined
space, because she would seize up!! The wounds could not be stitched
up again because of the position they are in. And TIME WOULD TELL
is the only thing he can say at this time.

The only experience we have had with tendons is tied tendons on
two youngsters we had. One was operated on, both front tendons
were cut; corrective shoes were put on for 6 to 8 months; everything
went back into place and she is perfectly sound today. The other
filly we had was a little younger and we had a chiropractor work
on her resulting in a sound wee one. I believe we were really lucky
in both cases. However, both of these cases were not due to an
injury but due to the fact that the bones were growing faster than
the tendons. We really keep a close watch on the little ones now
so that we can catch them in time.

Wish you the best of luck...how did the accident happen?
