656.0. "wierd noises" by VOLGA::J_BENNETT (Janice Bennett DTN 241-3522) Thu May 26 1988 13:26

	Here's a strange problem ....

My horse has, on 3 seperate occasions, and only on the lunge,
has made funny whistling noises. Let me begin by saying that I bought
him last November with a thorough vet check - which included extensive
work on the lunge in order for the vet to observe any lameness. He did
not make this noise at that time. About a week after I got him, I lunged
him before I rode. His buddy was outside playing in the paddock (which
is quite visible from the areana) and he started making a funny whistling/
whining noise and looking out the door (he's 7 and loves his playtime).
It only lasted a few minutes. He's never done this while being ridden, or
while in the pasture running around like a maniac.

The 2nd time was about 2 weeks ago. No one was playing outside,
it only lasted a few minutes, on the lunge. It happened again yesterday,
same scenario. The last two incidents were followed by the hiccups.
He is fairly fit, and doesn't get winded or very sweaty after a good
hour of work (can't say the same for his rider).

I don't lunge him extensively - usually for 10 or 15 minutes before
I ride to ensure that all bucking and playing is over with. I try to keep
it interesting (ie: transitions, halts, etc.). But it's as though he is
(literally) bored to tears with it all.

Has anyone had a similar experience? What are the symptoms of a
roarer? If he were a roarer, wouldn't this noise get progressively worse
as he gets worked harder? Would it affect his respiration?

Thanks,

	JB

My mare makes stange noises sometimes, as well. Sometimes grunts
or groans other times she makes little whistles or huffs and puffs
like a train on a steep hill. I had her scoped by the vet to see
what was going on and everything inside was just fine.
Sometimes she would make noises when I lunged or rode her. Other
times when I had just got her out and was grooming her. She just
likes to make noises I guess. Her way of amusing herself and passing
the time. A harmless quirk of hers and much better than having
her crib or some other nasty habit.

My mare also makes a funny noise but it's more of a squeek, like
a kid who is doing something against their will. She does it when
I ride her - and interestingly - my trainer (who also trained her
father said he did it) and her breeder said her sisters also di
(do) it. (I knew when she asked me "does Torrie still 'sing' when
    she's worked?).. no hiccups tho.
