520.0. "Truck Tires" by KEATON::FOX (A momentary lapse of reason... PF) Fri Feb 19 1988 20:03

Okay, I know that this CARBUFFS or whatever might be a better place
to put this question but I figured I'd ask all the horsey experts
    here too!

I am starting to look for new tires for my truck. I have a 1987
Chevy C10 pickup (2 WD). It is a heavy 1/2 ton with HD suspension,
etc. The tire size is LT23575R15. Now, what I'd like to know is,
do you have preferences for certain tire brands, etc. for hauling
a trailer? I haul a 2 horse trailer and I use it all year round
(therefore, mud and snow traction is important!) I think I'd like
all weather radials still but someone has suggested putting regular
radials in front and snow radials in back. Any comments on that
    suggestion?

Any and all comments are appreciated!

Also, tire manufacturers which people like/dislike for whatever
    reason?

Thanks in advance for any info,

    Linda

520.1I'm looking for tire info tooMIST::BACKSTROMSat Feb 20 1988 01:5017
I've got an F-250 with stock P235/85R16. These tires are 10 ply
and good for hauling on the highway. I'm still looking for a wider
tire that's good for backcountry hauling. Thought about the Goodyear
Wranger AT, but they only go to Class C (6 ply). Camper, hay and
trailer weight quickly go beyond the C rating. Summer is comming and
I need better tires then my passenger p/metrics to go horse camping.

I can help with one of your questions Linda, Stay away from Firestone
tires. I've known several people that had a tire disintegrate while
hauling. One friend had Firestone replace the tire and rim and had the
fender bodyworked, nocharge. The replacement tire had a blowout
    several months later.

    Tire suggestions anyone?

    Larry.

I DO KNOW IF THIS IS ANY HELP, BUT I HAVE A CHEVY 4X4 HEAVY DUTY.
I USE DURING THE WINTER ALL TERRAIN TIRES ( MUD/SNOW). I WILL CHECK
THE MAKE AND PLY TONIGHT FOR YOU. THEY ARE LOUD ON THE ROADS BUT
I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS IN THE LAST 14 YEARS WITH PULLING
BLOW OUTS, ETC. I FIND THAT I USUALLY CAN GET AT LEASE THREE WINTERS
    OUT OF THESE TIRES.

DURRING THE SUMMER, (GOOD WEATHER) I HAVE WIDDER MAGS AND TIRES
I PUT ON MY TRUCK. I BUY WHAT THEY CALL "HIGHWAY" TIRES. THEY ARE
WIDER SO THEY STICK TO THE ROAD WELL AND I HAVE NEVER HAD TO MUCH
TROULBE OR EVER GOTTEN STUCK OFF ROAD....4-WHEELING....THESE TIRES
ARE MUCH QUIETER AND I ALSO HAVE A CAMPER FOR THE BED OF MY TRUCK
SO IT IS QUITE A LOAD WHEN I PUT THAT ON THE HORSE TRAILER, CAMPER,
AND TWO 1200 LB. HORSES AND FEED AND MY SUPPLIES....

I WILL GET BACK TO YOU ON THE SIZES AND MAKE OF THE TIRES I USE.

    HAPPY TRUCKIN'.....

520.3Tire article may helpMIST::BACKSTROMWed Mar 09 1988 19:2815
The April issue of 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine features three articles
    on tires and wheels (rims).

The first article talks about treads and the tire size numbering scheme
used. Also talks about tire size vs drive ratio.

The second article talks about wheel and tire selection. This is
a helpful article in that it describes the different way wheels
are made and how to match a wheel and tire to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross
Vehicle Weight Rating). In addition, it talks about tire width
vs wheel width and how to match them.

The third article is a Buyer's Guide to Rims & Tires.

    Larry.
