469.0. "Ultrasound info???" by MARX::FOX () Fri Dec 18 1987 12:46

    Does anybody know of people in the New England (specifically Mass)
    are who do ultrasound? Also, has anyone out there had any experience
    with having their horse(s) ultrasounded? I am more interested in
    finding about horses with some type of leg injury or problem rather
    than checking out mares in foal.

    I know that Chris Emery in Lexington, MA does ultrasound but has
    anyone had her for their beasties?

    Any info, discussions, experiences, etc. that anyone has, please
    write it here!

    Thanks in advance,

    Linda

469.1Buck Hill VetNRADM5::CIAMPAGLIAFri Dec 18 1987 14:1311

    Hi Linda, I used Buck Hill Vet Service (Spencer, MA) for ultrasound
    for mine. But I have only used it in checking for pregnancy, I have
    never used it for any other method.

    They are real thorough and I trust ultrasound. I have had it used
    on my mare 4 times in the past 2 years, and the accuracy is great.

    That is my only suggestion - good luck!

469.2Chris Emery is goodPMRV70::MACONEFri Dec 18 1987 14:2715
    A friend of mine had Chris Emery do ultrasound on a horses legs
    as part of a pre-purchase exam. It cost $100 per leg but it was
    worth it.....it picked up an abnormality in the sesamoid bones that
    was not evident with regular xrays. She also used the ultrasound
    on a lump the horse had on his neck (the vet had thought is was
    from cribbing surgery), and it turned out to be a tumor. My friend
    was extremely impressed with how thorough and knowledgeable Chris
    was. Dr. Simenson, however, had to actually read the films and
    give the official diagnosis but Chris' eye was well trained enough
    to have picked out the problems before the vet gave the official
    results.

    Also, I used Dr. Gill once for an ultra sound for a preg test.

469.3Where were pictures read?MARX::FOXFri Dec 18 1987 15:037
    Jeannie, did Chris bring the pictures back to Marty or were they
    read there?

    Thanks,

    Linda

    Linda,

    I think Dr. Prentiss in N.Andover just got an ultrasound
    machine - a boarder at my barn has a mare with a leg injury
    and she was waiting for him to get it. His hospital # is
    617-682-9905.

    Linda,

    Chris took the pictures back to Simenson to read.

    Linda...

    Dr. Gill does do ultrasound. However, we have only had mares done
    for pregnancy and it has been very accurate.
    His number is 779-2867.

    GOOD LUCK

469.7Thanks for the info!MARX::FOXMon Dec 21 1987 15:5111
    Thanks for all the replies! I was asking about the ultrasound because
    a friend of mine's horse has been diagnosed as having strained
    suspensorys and it was suggested that the horse be rested for 3
    months and then ultrasounded to check the progress. I figured I'd
    help her out by finding out what I could about people who do
    ultrasound, costs, methods, etc so all your info has been helpful!

    Thanks again,

    Linda

    I have an eleven year old American Saddlebred gelding which bowed
    a tendon last spring. Even though I live in Missouri and can not
    recommend a vet, I can tell you that the ultrasound told us exactly
    the extent of the injury and when the horse could be put back in
    training. It took no longer than five minutes and I had the results
    back immediately. It was much better than continuing to work the
    horse and have him reinjure it since he never appeared lame.

    Well, the bad news is that Chris Emery had a baby and no longer does
    horses.

    The good news is that Marty Simonson has the equipment and is starting
    to do his own ultrasounds for lameness. Plus, he's cutting back on his
    track business, so its easier to get him locally.
