421.0. "Scheduling and Rotating Wormers" by MED::D_SMITH () Mon Nov 23 1987 13:28

    Who is correct as far as worming when and for what?
    I being a beginner (I admit)in such detail, am confused as to who's
    schedule is the most accurate!!!

    I read the note containing the Rochester Equine Clinic Worming
    Schedule, but our vet gave us a copy of her schedule showing
    a big difference. From what I understand about paresites and
    their life cycles, our vet's looks to be more on the money.

    For example R.E.C shows the use of Strongid T. for the month of
    December where as Sally McCreery's schedule shows Strongid in
    the months April and October and shows winter worming for bots
    using the active ingredience Trichlorfon contained in Telmin "B"
    and Negabot in December (being late fall and early winter).

    Who is who and what is what. Is the R.E.C. in the notes file a
    misprint (copied incorrectly) or is Sally's the ticket?

    Here is her schedule;

       DECEMBER EQVALAN PASTE WINTER WORMING FOR BOTS

       FEBRUARY           PANACUR

       APRIL STRONGID DOUBLE DOSE FOR TAPEWORMS

       JUNE               EQVALAN PASTE

       AUGUST             EQUIPAR

       OCTOBER STRONGID DOUBLE DOSE FOR TAPEWORMS

    Is determining a worming schedule up to one's self by understanding
    the life cycle of paresites and what pests are present in one's horse
    and following the rule of rotation of active igr.?
    Or are there pre-established schedules and who's is the most accurate?

    Any comments from those with proven methods and plans of attach?

    	I can't help you with your worming questions, but since you
    put this note here I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer
    for me. I need to know the chemical ingredient for equipar and
    panacur I could not find these two wormers.

    	I've decided to try the Rochester Equine's schedule but I worm
    every eight weeks, since I just wormed in Sept. with ivermectin
    I've just wormed her middle Nov. with strongid. After reading your
    note I'm not sure which schedule to follow.

421.2Coming or GoingMED::D_SMITHTue Nov 24 1987 16:374
    Sounds like you went down the same road I did and arrived at the end. One
    person says turn right, the other says turn left. Does either direction
    take you to the same place or what Ricky whaaaaat??? Lucy is so confused!

421.3PanacurMED::D_SMITHTue Nov 24 1987 16:487
    I know the answer for one of two questions you had.
    Panacur contains Fenbenclazole which must be a new ingredient or
    a combination of two or more because I cannot find it listed anywhere.
    except on the container.

    But I'm sure someone will explain someday.

421.4could be the locationNOETIC::KOLBElaughing on the outside...Wed Nov 25 1987 22:186
	I think some of the differences in worming schedules are due to
	the location. My vet says we don't have to worm as often in
	Colorado as they do in milder climates. My mare is on a 2 month
	rotation now with bot killers in the spring and fall but I bet
	in many states you would have to worm every month. liesl
421.5wormers from wholesale houses?DANUBE::HARPERFri Dec 18 1987 17:2612
    I guess I don't completely understand all the hoopla about worming,
    but then I'm pretty much of a novice. I got my mares a year and
    a half ago and just went along with the schedule that my vet gave.
    I worm them with strongid, panacur and ivermectin four times a year
    and have stool samples checked twice a year and am having no trouble
    so far. Maybe I'm just lucky!!

    I have recently subscribed to "Horses Illustrated" which has an
    add every month for wormers of different varieties and strengths
    as what seems like a very good price. Does anyone know if there
    are any problems ordering wormers from wholesale houses?

421.6wholesalers are o.k.VOLGA::PORTERMon Dec 21 1987 10:028
    Due to the fact I have three horses and the high price of
    wormers i have been buying all of my wormers and vaccines from
    mail-away wholesalers. I have never had any problem, the
    expiration dates are far enough out so I only have to buy
    twice a year. The savings is incredible, I have saved as
    much as 50% at times. Having dealt with some large barns
    (up to 13 horses) I know they also are buying this way, with
    no problems.
