435.0. "Detergent for allergies, anyone?" by MARX::FOX () Mon Nov 02 1987 20:16

    Does anyone out there in equine-land know of a hypo-allergenic type
    of liquid laundry detergent that I might be able to get to wash
    my critters saddle pads, blankets, etc. with? I have been using
    Arm and Hammer detergent but over the last year my critter has
    developed some strange cysts on his back which has been determined
    to have been caused by some kind of allergic reaction, but of course,
    no one can figure out what he is allergic to.

    Now, as a long shot I figured that I would try changing my laundry
    detergent (even though I usually run 2 rinses). I doubt that is
    the problem but, I'll give it a try!

    Thanks in advance for any info!

    Linda

    P.S. For any of you about to ask about the cysts, they have been
    injected and may or may not return, are painless, don't itch, etc.
    and even though they just showed up over the last year, nothing
    has been changed in his "routine" for at least 2 years (same pads,
    detergent, pasture, stall....... oh well...)

    I use a product from AMWAY that is biodegradable. I use it to wash
    my horse, because it won't hurt him if I don't get it all rinsed
    out. The Product is called L.O.C. "Liquid Organic Cleaner" and
    has a high sudsing and regular form. I prefer the high sudsing
    for bathing the critter.

    I guess you could try your favorite horse soap in the washer too.

    To get AMWAY products you need to know someone who sells it. Let
    me know if you'd like to give it a try and I'll get you in touch
    with my contact. (AMWAY works some what like AVON and isn't available
    in stores).

    Good Luck,
    Dani

    Hi!! Yep Amways LOC is the product to use to wash your horse -
    the stuff to use for your blankets is S.A.8 Laundry powder or you
    can get it in liquid form. It is actually recognized by a lot of
    doctors as being the best laundry compound to use where allergys
    are concerned in human critters. LOC is great in the bath for eczema
    as well.

    If you have either a grey horse or a horse with white sox, after
    the wash with LOC put some Amway Smashing White on the white bits
    - they really will come up smashing white (oh, rinse off after a
    couple of minutes). Great for white tails and manes!!!! N once
    again, all biodegradable - I know all this cos I've a grey mare
    who loves to get mud and grass stains all over her!!!!!!!!!! N I
    sell Amway!!

    Good luck anyway - n let us know how it goes!!

435.3Amway distributers?MARX::FOXWed Nov 04 1987 16:006
    Thanks for the suggestions about the Amway LOC! Now does anyone know
    of an Amway dealer near Bedford or Groton Mass?

    Thanks!

435.4Can Help with Amway Distributers if Needed!!!NZOV07::THOMASThu Nov 05 1987 19:1515
    Linda,

    Naturally being in New Zealand I don't know of an Amway dealer but
    if you get no joy from over there I can try n trace a dealer there
    from our lines here. I know in Syndey (OZ) there is a huge Amway
    warehouse which is open to anyone n you don't have to go thru a
    small dealer (bit like a supermarket!) Perhaps there is something
    over there like it.

    Anyway, let me know if there is anything I can do from here, may
    take a while but - scream if you need help!!!!!

    Happy riding

435.5Thanks for the help!!!MARX::FOXFri Nov 06 1987 16:3813
    Trudi, thank you for the offer! Just 5 minutes ago my phon erang
    and a very nice lady from the Merrimac facility in NH called me
    up and mentioned that she had heard through the grapevine that I
    was interested in ordering L.O.C. and so I have just ordered some
    and am looking forward to trying it (thanks Dani!)

    I'll keep everyone posted as to whether or not the detergent was
    the cause of the allergies!

    		Again, thanks all...
