332.0. "DMSO - not for humans" by IMAGIN::KOLBE (Mudluscious and puddle-wonderfull) Wed Jul 15 1987 21:57

	A word of warning to those who use equine treatments on themsleves.

	Last night, while attempting to catch a fiesty pony, one of the
	ladies at our barn got kicked pretty badly. One of the guys helped
	her back to the barn to sit down and went back to the chase.
	meanwhile Claudia, whose leg started having spasms, decided to
	put DMSO on her leg, it's works for horses right. Boy, did she
	regret that. Before any of us got back she had fallen over from
	a sitting position with dizzyness and nausea. We washed off what
	hadn't already sunk in and took her home but she was ill for
	some time. DMSO is NOT approved for use on humans and should
	not be self-prescribed. My vet had told me that when using it you
	should wear gloves and avoid contact with your skin. liesl

332.1different forms/strengths?TOPDOC::NAJJARThu Jul 16 1987 15:595
    I know that some form of DMSO is used by professional sports players
    for injuries. Possible the strength is different, because my small
    animal vet had me use it on my cat at one time, and it didn't seem
    to have any strange effect on him. I think the smell/taste is bad
    enough that it would discourage people from using it anyway.

    Take care. DMSO will increate membrane porosity and can be used
    as a vehicle for carrying other compounds, including toxins, into
    the body by external application. (A number of urban legends surround
    this use.) So, keep the DMSO free of contaminants and be certain
    that the area it is applied to is VERY clean.

332.3Is DMSO a treatment for arthritis?NHL::SILVAI finally got a PONY of my OWNYThu Jan 19 1989 11:106
    Is DMSO used as a relief from arthritis?...for the horse I mean.

    My QH mare suffers from stiffness in the cold weather and was wondering
    if using this might make her more comfortable.

    Any ideas on something less *dangerous* would be appreciated too!
