209.0. "Horse Dentists" by MOZART::MJOHNSON () Wed Feb 11 1987 15:05

Could someone please recommend a horse dentist to me? If I should find one
who is willing to come out to Jaffrey NH ... are there any other people
in South-Western NH who would want to book a horse-dental appointment in
the near future? This would save on driving expenses...

Any info would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Melinda

209.1Try to get Harry RobinsonNOWIMP::DADDAMIOSleep late and pray for SpringWed Feb 11 1987 15:4411
We get Harry Robinson from Rhode Island. Our neighbors have him
come to do their 30+ horses and he comes over and does our three
afterward. He is excellent and is training his two sons in the
business. I think there are some people from Hollis that are trying
to get him also, you may want to check with some of the people in
the Monadnock Area Dressage Assoc. to see if they know who is
organizing this. I don't know if he'll have time to do more horses
after us because he does another farm in Greenfield, too, but I
can check for you (BTW we are in Peterborough).

what are you trying to do? floating teeth can be done
by a shoer (out here they say farrier). anyway, as far as dentists
goes call Dar-col-stables and ask mrs. Dubois who she uses.

209.3It beHOOVES you to use a DENTIST...MMO01::DONALDSONGSG Sales Support-Huntsville,AL.Fri Feb 13 1987 02:4736
I would not have my farrier float my horses' teeth even though he
is an excellent farrier. I also have an excellent vet, but from
all the vets I have seen and used, none of them spend enough time
examining the horses' teeth. Vets generally don't seem to have been
schooled in the importance of health teeth.

Farriers are committed to the care and well being of the horse's
hooves, such as podiatrists are for people's feet. Would you have
your foot doctor work on your teeth ?

I have been to quite a few equine seminars where I was introduced
to the speciality of equine denistry, fortunately for me and
    my horses.

Here is an example where a ferrier whould have been useless, the
vet would have caused the horse undue pain and the expense would
    have been considerably more.

I have an old house who had trouble grinding her feed. Originally the
Vet said, "float the tooth". I had the dentist examine the horse he
said, "pull the tooth". The problem tooth was a molar. This dentist
diagnosed extraction of the tooth as it was grinding into the jaw.
My vet said the tooth could not be pulled because only drilling
through the jaw would work as that is what vet school taught him.
Fortunately for me and my horse I went with the dentist's decision.
The dentist extracted the tooth in a matter of seconds. After it was all
over, we all found out that the horse's tooth had been abcessed
and her nose drained for twelve days afterwards. She has gained weight
    and is eating much better.

By the way, she is 38 years old.

Get an equine dentist when it is possible. Healthy teeth help keep
    a horse healthy.

I'll second .3 in having a dentist do the work. I wouldn't have
my dentist treat my feet nor have a podiatrist clean my teeth! To
me, it's worth the extra few dollars to have the dentist come in.

I agree that it is important to have an equine dentist take care
of your horse's teeth. In response to .2, in your case a farrier
may have been able to float your horses teeth, but he may not be
able to detect other dental problems that could be the actual cause
of problems. What you are paying for is the expertise and preventative
medicine that best comes from a specialist.

Ed Miriam is our dentist and we have him out for prevention once
a year with additional trips as needed for corrective work.

I agree with .3. Farriers do feet; dentists do teeth.

Bob Samard takes care of my horses's teeth. Although his home is
in CT. he usually spends one week a month in NH. The Bud people
think enough of him to fly him to St. Louis and to CA. to do their
horses there as well as the ones in the Merrimack Stable.

I can't recall his address and phone number, but I look it up tonight.

I'm very satisfied with Bob and when it comes to my horses, I'm
    hard to please.

Harry Robinson is the person who comes to the barn I'm at.
I'm very happy with him. He is very difficult to get ahold
    	of however.

My first horse, Bill hadn't been done for years when I first
got him. Harry found hooks and sharp points on his teeth
that were poking his gums. After Harry did his thing, Bill
was much more accepting of the bit as well as happier eating his
    	grain.

    Hi, Melinda!

A horse dentist from Salem, NH comes to the barn I board my horse
at in Auburn, NH every Spring. The lady I board with does the
arranging to have him check all the horses' teeth at her place just
as preventative maintenance. I believe his name is Hubert Barker
    (603) 893-8164. You might give him a call.

There is a vet in the sailsbury area who has done some work on
horses at the barn where I board, and has vetted out a horse for
me. His name is Bradford Barnes. I'll look up the number tonight
and send it to you. He has a couple of horses that he events and
he is very good with the horses he treats. If he doesn't do dentistry
work, or does not have the time, I'm sure he could recommend someone
    to you.

ok here goes...... i know i'm going to get beat up on this one.

however:: we use a regular horse dentist at the barn, but!,
i don't use him. i'll tell you why. i was at one barn and i checked
my horses teeth. they needed to be floated and the stables had called
a dentist in so he did Cil's. the price was expensive.

see i come from denver and the shoers would float the teeth
or if the vet was up he would do it.

there were times that i did them myself. you run your fingers
up in outside and the back and check for any sharp edges. take a
file and file down the edges. i have had my share of horses and
we also did the clients horses.

but if the horse was having problems with eating then yes, i
    would call the dentist.
but normal floating can to done by a shoer or a vet.

sorry guys that how we did things in denver and thats how i run
    my horse management.

i think it a matter of preference, really. it's like saying whats
the right way to cool sweaty horses in the winter.

    		wendy.

also the wolf teeth that come in should also be extracted by a vet
    or a dentist.

I used to just use my vet for dental care until I went to a
seminar and listened to this dentist speak. Lucky for me and my
horses! I had had 3 different vets over the 13 years that I`ve had
this mare and none of them discovered the molar problem she had
that I discussed previously(note .3). If it hadn`t have been for him
my mare would have developed quite a few more problems.

I have many more examples that will strengthen my point in favor
of dentists if you need them. Yes, a vet can float teeth and other
experienced horse people, but why not use someone who is involved
with teeth every day and can catch problems before they get worse?

Preference is one thing but it was my dentist not my vet that noticed
that my yearling was having trouble with her first teeth(she was
cribbing to try to knock out these loose teeth). After he `flicked`
them out, pulled her wolf teeth and a first tooth that was growing
crooked she started eating better and stopped cribbing.

YES it is a matter of preference and I vote for dentists!

209.14Thank YouTALLIS::MJOHNSONFri Feb 27 1987 17:348
Thank you for all your suggestions for a horse dentist. I've been in
touch with Harry Robinson and am hoping to get him when he comes out
to Dubois's farm this March. My old-boy, Rex, is 25 this year and is
having serious trouble eating. His teeth are floated regularly by my
vet in Peterborough -- but it's not enough. I'm hoping the horse
dentist can pin point the problem.

could someone please give me the phone numbers of the 3 dentists

needs his teeth examined and want a dentist to do it. Thanks to
    you all.
209.16HARRY ROBINSON...WHERE ARE YOU!?!?!?PBA::SILVAThu May 05 1988 19:4121
I realize that this note is getting old, but I too would like to
know how to get in touch with Harry Robinson. My vet (Dr. Jessie
Shayevitz - Nashoba Valley Vet Hospital) is looking for his number
too. If I get it I will be sure to post it here!

Although I am fairly new to this "horsey" stuff I have to agree
with those of you who expect to get a dentist to work on teeth!

"Dr Jessie" did float my Morgans teeth, but she also admitted that
a dentist should be called in. A vet can do an O.K. job...but one
that will usually only suffice until those MUCH in demand Dentists
can fit you into their schedule.

Sure they are expensive...but I'm working now to support the big
guy and his "girlfriend". Just couldn't live if anything happened
to them because of my neglect.

I called Dr. Barnes (in Atkinson, NH I think) and the woman who
answered the phone told me that there is no such thing as a Vet
who would be better at teeth than any other Vet. After all (her
own words) they study the whole horse in school don't they?
Well, I asked her to ask Dr. Barnes about a reference to a horse
dentist down this way (Harvard, MA) - that was over a week ago......
They never called back. And I'm not in the mood to be treated like
that again. I still believe that people can and DO specialize within
their own field. Has anyone ever had Dr. Damitz or Dr. Lennon from
the Nashoba Valley Vet Hospital do "dental work"? When Dr Jesse
Shayveitz was there she said that it would be better to get Harry
Robinson... Yes they know about teeth (her and her associates)
but it is a science unto itself...and best left to a specialist.

As soon as I can talk to Dr Damitz or Lennon (rather than the
receptionist) I'll get 2 more opinions. And probably more confused!

here..............somewhere. However, he is the man to use. Penny
Tweety from Claybourn Farms in Kentucky (where Sectratariat resides)
flies him there to do her horses teeth. Can't get better credentials
than that. I have used Ed Mariam (enough said) I have heard of
Harry doing horses that Ed won't touch. He did my green baby without
a twitch, just reached in and pulled out those wolf teeth with no
    fuss.

He gave an excellent, well informed speech to our riding club last
week and a few of the members who have used him in the past really
recommend him. Some of you may know him as a blacksmith (no jokes
here about Foot & Mouth). He has been studying and going to school
for this change in his trade. I felt that he knew what he was talking
about and has the background to work with horses without having to
sedate them for the floating. He certainly is enthusiastic about
    this field of work.
