15.0. "Anybody from Colorado?" by CSC32::KOLBE (Liesl - Colorado Springs) Wed Sep 24 1986 23:44

It seems most of you are from the east. Is there anybody from Colorado
in this file? I'd like to know others who ride. I work at the support
center in Colorado Springs but board my (leased) horse at Pinewind
    in Monument.

I'd also like to know if anyone knows of other good places to board
closer to C.S. as Monument is a 20/30 minute drive for me.

I would have thought the "wild west" would have more riders. Liesl

Hello Liesl! My name is Bob Koller. I work in the CXO1 building.
I've seen your name in the notes from time to time but did not think
    you were from Colorado.

I've been in Colorado since 1980. We live in the Rustic Hills area
and are down to one Morgan horse since my daughter gave up on
hunter/jumping. Now it looks like she may have given up riding
altogether (al least for a while. High school junior and all that
stuff). Anyway I've inherited the morgan and I'm learning to ride.

I don't know whereabouts in town you live but you might want to
check out Kettle Creek Ranch on Old Ranch Road off route 83 just
about where the Ford Aerospace plant is. This place has miles and
miles of trails. There may be quite a few private places in the
Black Forest. Oh yeah! Faith Brennan has a place off Woodmen Road
at Mustang place. You might want to call her (DTN 522-3386).

What kind of riding do you do?

John Zinn (CSC guy) and his family are also into horses. He lives
    in Rustic Hills too.

If you are interested you may want to consider joining one of the
local riding clubs (we belong to the Sand Drifters Riding Club)
and/or the El Paso County Horsemen's Council)

Enough for now. Hope to meet you soon!

    Bob Koller

    RE: .0
I think that when you look around there are a lot more 'cowboys'
here than you think. If my memory serves me there are at least
three other noters from Colorado that read and respond to this file.
I think the reason that the 'horsey' types seem to be in the minority
is because we are. There sure does seem to be a lot of yuppie types
that do not understand the pleasures of equine endevors. So when
you are the minority we just have to stick together.

Since you board at Pinewind I take it that you prefer the English
way of going. I'm sure that you have found out that here that also
    puts you into another minority.

To directly answer your question as far as boarding. I think that
you will find that any boarding stable in the CS area will either
be 20/30 minutes or VERY expensive(western standards). If you are
interested in possibly boarding at smaller private stables with
an extra stall or two there are some closer, but they do not have
the same kind of facilites. I hesitate to put their names up here
since I would probably forget somebody. (These are other DECies)
So give me a call (x3222) or drop me a note in mail and I'll try
    and help.

I guess the bottom line is that the 'cowboys' and 'cowgirls' are
here you just have to find us.

    -John-

15.3glad to hear from youCSC32::KOLBELiesl - Colorardo Springs - DTN 522-5681Fri Sep 26 1986 00:0427
HI John and Bob, glad to meet you. I do ride english (that's the
only type of saddle I have) but I grew up riding western as a 4H'er
    in Indiana.

Yes, I do know John Zinn, I used to work for him. I've been trying
to get him to join the notes file. It's good to know there are others
    out here that ride.

Right now I'm leasing a horse but I hope to be able to purchase
one in the Jan-Feb timeframe. That's why I'm scouting out places
to board. It seems it's harder to find a place to board than it
is to find a horse to buy. Pinewind has some great trails but it
is a long drive. I live over in Pinion Station behind the park that's
    behind Digital.

Once I have my own horse (translate to mean one I can trail to other
places to ride) I would like to try and organize a group ride like
the folks from back east are doing.

If you are ever over at the Support center I sit by pole 2/N13 ext
5681. I'm in a new group called ISG (Information Services), we handle
all the technical databases like SID and STARS.

Do either of you know Colleen McCloughlin? She has horses in Black
Forest. I think GENRAL is one of the systems she manages.

There may be more horsey folks than I thought. Liesl

Hi, Liesl. I read this file, too. I don't have any horses yet,
but I will some day. I did a lot of riding in my teens in California.

For those of you who don't know me, I work at the CSC, too, with
the Language Support Team. I'm looking forward to seeing how many
    Colorado people respond.

    Hi Liesl,

I'm another "horsey type" from Colorado - I work in the MIS department
in the CXO1 building. I know there are alot more of us out there
that aren't responding. Like Walt (I know, you work for a living-
or don't you know how to reply? Just kidding, I guess I'll hear
about it if you ever read this).

I live south of town on Hwy 115, in Red Rock Valley. I keep my
horses at my house, but am getting ready to board my mare in November
when I wean my filly. Some people bought Bob Zyer's old place (1
mile from my house) and are really cleaning it up. I guess that
is probably too far for you.

Stop by and see me if you're in the area... I'm by pole Q14, upstairs
from the credit union, next to the cafeteria, by the windows.

John McConnell from Boulder riding So Dark placed 8th in the Volvo
World Cup Grand Prix jumping in Paris two weeks ago. This was his
first trip to the World Cup.

Three cheers for his representation of Colorado!

By the way, Katie Burdsall on The Natural won it, a Frenchman was
second on an Anglo-Arab, and Lisa Jacquin was third on For The Moment.

For The Moment and So Dark are American Thoroughbreds.

I just saw your entry & I'm glad that there are a few horse owners
    here at CX01/2, etc.
The wife & I own an Arab, so that's probably why I don't recognize
the ranch that you are boarded at. We're at the edge of Black Forest
on Shoup Road with our trainer, so it does make it nice to know
what is going on & what to do.

Doesn't look like anyone's responded to this note for awhile, so
I hope someone sees it. I'm going to be out your way (from Mother
Maynard) for two months starting mid April. I'd love to find a
place to ride while I'm here. I normally ride English, but could
refresh my Western if opportunities are more plentiful. And I'm
always looking for horse people to chat with. Don't know where
I'll be based at CXO, but you can contact me on vaxmail AKOV12::BISHOP
or just reply to this note. Hope to hear from you!

Diana,we live about thirty miles east of CXO,and have a few
    horses. I don't rent horses so I don't have much input there,but
I'll ask around. I know a few horsey type folks in the area, and
maybe they can help. I'm on Easynet at GENRAL::Bourbeau,and
my DTN is 522-2116. Give me a call or drop a note, and we can
plan lunch one day and talk about the silly beasts that we like
    so much.

HI Diana, it could be dangerous riding in Colorado - you may never
want to leave! This place affects people that way. I don't know
of any English rental places but Palmer Park in town rents western
horses and I hear there's a great place to ride near the Royal
Gorge. I'd be glad to go along on the Royal Gorge ride if you are
	interested. I'm at CX03 NOETIC::KOLBE. liesl
15.14Half Lease a horse...SSDEVO::KOLLERSat Apr 02 1988 01:115
Diana, one possibility is to sign up for lessons at one of the stables.
Once there you might be able to get a half lease on a horse for
one or two months. The place I have in mind is Boggey Meadows Farm
owned by Vicki Byrne in Black Forest. Just a thought.

Well of course there are folks in Colorado, and a lot of us have
horses. There are a lot of places to ride here, although it's getting
a little more restricred as the city grows. I'm in CXO, so give
a yell when you get here. I'll be glad to try to answer any questions
you might have. There are other Colorado folks who participate in
this note file,so you ask away. Hope you like your new home as much
as I like (make that LOVE) it.

This is wehat I was trying to say in the other note when the link
went down. I am going to be moving to Colorado Springs in the late
July/early August time frame. I will be working for the in-house
field service group in CX01/CX02 maintaining the
engineering/manufacturing systems. I am going to be moving my mare
out about the same time. Where would be a good place to board her?
I would want her at a barn that has an indoor areana and access
to trails. It would be nice if the barn was hunter/jumper as well.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I will also be looking for
an apartment for me to rent and would like something on the north
end of the Springs if possible. I will be having her shipped out
by a professional shipper. I call Nationwide and they seemed to
know what they were doing. Has anyone ever used them? The quote
they gave me was very reasonable and they have a barn to board her
at until I get more settled and find something permanent.

I'm looking forward to this move very much.

Pat, we used Nationwide to move our blind mare out here, and
were very satisfied with their service. As far as a place to board,
since I don't, it's hard for me to say. I think Trail's End might
meet your needs, but I don't know anyone who boards there.
You might try add a conference "GENRAL::Colorado_Horse".
This is here in the Springs, and many of the participants board
    locally.

    Hi Pat,

I'm currently boarding my quarter horse at PINEWIND FARMS in
Monument. Its got pasture, its near trails and has an
indoor arena. however, it is (to me) a bit of a distance away
    from the Springs.

the horses are well cared for and there is a hunter/jumper trainer
    there as well as dressage.

you might also consider checking out some of the private places
in the Black Forrest. I believe there is a fellow deccie that
owns a boarding facility out there called 'Erin Ranch'. i've
visited there and its very nice (also with an indoor arena).
I think her name is Faith Brennan.

let me know when you get out here and i'll be glad to take a few
    'shopping' trips with you!

In addition to Pinewind, there are Trails End (also previously
mentioned)with good facilities (indoor arena, good sized stalls
and runs) and Kettle Creek (pasture and riding trails - don't
recall an indoor arena). There are others, but they keep changing
names every year or so. Trails End is east of the city and Kettle
Creek is north. There are also a number of private boarding
opportunities available, even in the city (two neighborhhods,
Rustic Hills on the east side and Falcon Estates on the north,
are zoned for horses.) As for apartments, we have so many vacant
ones in this town, you can about name your location and see rents
that EMass'ers will not believe! Anyway, welcome to the Wild West.

Thanks for all the help. I sold the house last night (3 days on
the market) and am getting estimates for the moving van and the
Nationwide for my mare. The closing date on the house will be July
15th. I am shipping my mare out the weekend of the 8th to Trails
End. I will be leaving Chicago (good riddence) on the afternoon
of the 15th and will spend the night in Iowa at my parents house.
Will leave for CXO on the 16th and get in sometime late on the 17th.
I am taking the next week as vacation so that I can find a place
and settle in without worrying about fitting it in around work.
I decieded on shipping her to Trails End because they seem to have
everything that I wanted and they have someone there full time.
They quoted my a $250.00 a month board fee for services that run
between $350.00 and $500.00 a month here in Chicago. I am currently
paying $165.00 at a private barn that does have an indoor but that
is about it. No trails, jumps or private turnout. It is also about
1 hour from work out in the next county. I spend an hour a day
just going to and from the barn. Yuch! I can't wait to get moved
and settled in out there. Re. .20 I would love to go shopping
with you the week that I am out there on vacation. Will give you
a call on DTN sometime this week or next. My boss and all of the
others in my group are either on vaction or in school leaving me
to do the work of 5 and pack and sell the house at the same time.
I haven't seen my mare in two weeks. She won't know me.

Got to run. Pager is going crazy.

there is a place in colorado, where you own ranch or famlily
has thier own brand, or talk to the brand inspectors out there.
if you dont know where to go from here, call the extension offices,
they* should* be of some help. I would call the henderson extension
