134.0. "Unusual trail obstacles" by CTOAVX::IZZO () Thu Sep 18 1986 14:03

I'm involved with the "putting together" of 3 shows every year.
A thought has crossed my mind that perhaps I'm not alone, and that
a collection of good/unusual trail obstacles might help us come
up with more interesting trail classes.

My favorites over the years include:

    1) a "bridge" painted florescent orange with a large black circle
painted in the middle. Looks to a horse like a bottomless whole
       in the bridge.

    2) I once had to ride through a "path" that was lined rider-high
       with chickens in crates.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I like a good challenge
in a trail class...plain back-through's and side passes get boring.
Got any more good ones to add?

Some that I have come across are:

    1. a sheet of clear or black plastic placed on the ground either
on top of soft sand or straw. (edges held down with rocks or
ground poles. (some even had water on them)

    2. open, go thru, and close a gate.

    3. tires placed on the ground arranged for the horse to step in
       (or on)

    4. Putting on & taking off a raincoat.

(I'll try and remember some others)

    	1) AS IN RE 1. CLEAR OR BLACK PLASTIC BUT USE DRY ICE AROUND
THE SIDES TO SIMULATE FOG. ALOT OF HORSES WONT COME NEAR IT. THIS
DIVIDES TO REAL TRAIL HORSES FROM THE 1/2 AND 1/2 ;^) !

One of my favorites was one that we had to ride through a few years
ago which involved dismounting, ground-tying the horse and then
the rider proceeds to walk into a wooden out-house and pull the
lever (complete with flushing sound) and then walk out and mount
the horse. It's really amazing how fast people can run to catch
their horses even when they have chaps dragging! It was a good
safe obstacle for the trail class and it was an immense crowd pleaser!

Also, similar to your chickens, at the Nationals they had a couple
of llamas. If anyone knows llamas then you know that they spit
and can look mean. They even psyche out the horses!

I had ridden through one that involved a tack store set up. You had to
ground tie, go in the store, come out with a bunch of carrots, and
remount, then put the carrots in a mail box. You wouldn't belive how
fast some horses learn to open mail boxes.
