16.0. "--> VACCINES <--" by LAUREL::REMILLARD () Tue Mar 25 1986 16:34

    	Hi there...

    	I mentioned that I gave my own shots to my nags. Foster &
    	Smith is the company I order from (it is owned and operated
    	by practicing vets). They don't order a large supply of
    	anything they sell - they order weekly to insure that you get
    	the freshest products with the longest dating possible. There
    	are no generics. I am very happy with the vaccines I have ordered
    	and I have been ordering for the past 4 years. They also carry
    	canine, feline and other cridder stuff. Some of the products
    	must have a written prescription from your vet (for heartworm
    	medication and some wormers).

    	I feel their prices are good for the quailty you get (brand
    	names) and their fast service.

    	I use - Rhinomune - a dessicated modified live virus vaccine
    	for vaccination against rhinopneumonitis caused by equine
    	herpessvirus type I.

    	and - Fluvac EWT - Protects against A1 and A2 influenza, Eastern
    	and Western encephalomyelitis and tetanus.

    	But they have other combos to choose from.

    	I worked with a vet for a number of years on just horses -
    	otherwise I wouldn't recommend that "just anyone" give their
    	own shots.

    	But for those who do - here is the address:

    		Foster & Smith
    		1848 North Stevens, P.O. Box 100
    		Rhinelander, WI  54501

    	They also have a toll-free number for ordering - 1-800-826-7206

    	**I got a note from someone suggesting I include this in this
    	notes file - I am sorry I didn't get back to you - I deleted
    	your note instead of answering it!!

16.1Which Rhino vaccine is best?NEWVAX::AIKENI love Crabbet Arabians! 301-867-1584Tue Sep 09 1986 18:278
    Susan, is there a reason you use a live virus against Rhino rather
    than Pneumabort-k, a killed virus? Does your live virus shed?

    Please let me know. I raise Arabian horses and use Rhino vaccine
    the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th month.

16.2LIVE - VIRUSLAUREL::REMILLARDTue Sep 09 1986 20:0824

    	HI Merrie!!

    	I use a live virus beacause I have geldings and they are in
    	no danger of ever aborting. (lame joke... sorry!!)

    	It is safer to do the method that you are using for your mares!

    	I think there *might* be some danger to your "babies in the
    	oven" if you use a live virus.

    	Also, the main reason I use the live vs killed is, that with
    	the live - you need only one booster every year.

    	As with anything.... REMEMBER - just because you give the shot
    	your vaccine DOES NOT work right away. There is a period that
    	is as good as not having the shot (sometimes up to 3 weeks or
    	more).

    	You may want to ask your vet when a "safe period" would be for
    	the new borders to come into your barn..... Since you may have
    	alot to lose.

    	I re-read my last note....

    	It really depends on WHAT your using... the safest way is to
    	ask your vet or read the material that comes with your vaccines.
    	I have found that in most cases, it will tell you how long it
    	will be till it "takes".

16.4-< MORE DRUGS - ACK! >-DYO780::AXTELLDragon LadyTue Sep 16 1986 15:4716
    My vet recommended not using Pneumabort-K in the 3rd month of pregnancy
    because of complications (including abortions and high rates of
    reabsorption) that were observed at Ohio State. Any comments?

    Also, alternative sources for vaccines:
    I have been very happy with Omaha vaccine and Jeffers Veterinary
    Supply. Good quality, prompt shipping, etc. There's also a supply
    house in california - PRO-VET - that didn't require a script for
    things that should have needed them (like bute and Rompun). The
    theory behind this is that they sell only to respectable businesses
    (catterys, breeding farms, etc). I'm not sure what their doing is
    exactly legal or a good idea (the road to ruin being paved with
    good intentions) but they had super prices for generics.
