Title:DECdns - Digital's Distributed Name Service

1440.0. "%DNS-E-NOCOMMUNICATION on one directory only " by GIDDAY::CHONG (Andrew Chong - Sydney CSC) Tue May 13 1997 02:34

One directory (.AUTO) is returning NOCOMM error. This is true even
when acs_override is enabled.

There are 2 dns servers, one on DECnet/OSI system (vms V6.2) the other
is DECnetVAX-Ext node ( yes, DNS V1.x !!). The .AUTO directory is only
replicated on the V2 server (i.e no readonly copy). All the subdirectory
of .AUTO can be accessed.

The strange thing is "sho dir .auto " gives error while " show replica
.auto at clear .auto_ch " works.

I am aware that the dns patches is a bit behind on this system and
will get the customer to apply eco70.

In the mean time any thoughts on what is the caused of the NOCOMM
on this one directory ? any remedy ?

Regards,
Andrew

First of all you should upgrade DNS to eco 70 and convert the
clearinghouse from version 1 to version 2 (note: version 1 is no longer
    support).

check sys$manager:dns$chfail.log - to see what clearinghouse it was
trying to contact and what the failure reason was. Possibly the clerk
had some stale data in the cache (dump it so see) - if so purge the
    cache.

Bob,

Today the problem disappeared. Perhaps you were right about stale cache.
I checked the dns$chfail.log file, there were no entries later than Thu Jan 9.

The customer will consider upgrade . Thanks .
