847.2CHARLES RIVER WHEELMEN FALL 25/50/62/100JETSAM::HANAUERMike... Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamWed Sep 07 1988 16:1143
Sunday, September 18, 1988

7:30 100 Miles (century)
9:30 62 miles (Metric century)
9:30 50 miles (half century)
10:30 25 miles (quarter century)

All rides start from the Pillar House Restaurant, Rt 16 at Route 128
in Newton, MA. [The starting point is in the Southwest entry ramp]

Registration at the event is $7.00 (6.00 for CRW members).
Call 617/325-BIKE for last minute info OR general info
		anytime on CRW.

Includes after ride party, food, patch, arrowed routes, maps,
limited sag, and a great group of people.

But wait, there's more. For the centurions there are Century
Challenge training guides, certificates of merit, a drawing for
bikes and locks, plus the satisfaction of making it to Purgatory
Chasm and back. The Century Challenge is sporsored by Bicycling
Magazine and the League of American Wheelmen.

The century includes the towns of Newton, Wellesley, Natick,
Framingham, Westborough, Grafton, Millbury, Sutton, Mendon,
Blackstone, Milford and Holliston. It is a somewhat challenging but
scenic and fun (read: some hills) route. I've done it 2 years in a
row in the rain (of course) and recommend it (the ride, not the
rain). (We do this route every fall until we get the weather
right!)

After riding the century, Eric (calls himself Bicycle Bozo) Ferioli
will give a demonstration of how to patch a tubular (sew-up) tire.
So, for any of you fools (Eric's term) that ride on the blasted
things, this is a chance to see how they are patched (or how Eric
does it). Those of you intelligent people that do not ride on
tubulars, this is an opportune time to witness what you are
missing!!

847.3COVAC Century Route - Well worth it.PICV01::CANELLAWed Sep 14 1988 16:5382
I just recently rode the COVAC century and thought that it was well
worth the trip to Hadley to do it. The route was well marked, the
roads were fairly tranquil, the scenery was spectacular in most
instances, and the break stops were well stocked with goodies provided
by cheerful Franklin-Hampshire Wheelpeople. I was requested to
write down the route for other folks who might wish to ride it.
    So, here it goes:

If you go soon, you may follow the A arrows rather than have to
follow the map, otherwise there may be too many turns especially
during the first 40 miles or so. By the way, the route goes through a real,
honest-to-goodness covered bridge; I think it occurs at mile 32,
but I'm not sure. The smell of the fermenting alfalfa and the cow
pastures reminded me of the heady days of childhood back in Mexico!
