811.0. "Mackinac Island = horsesh*t" by EUCLID::PAULHUS (Chris @ MLO8-3/T13 dtn 223-6871) Sun Aug 07 1988 17:42

    	I have long heard about Mackinac Island as a great vacation
    spot with bikes the usual form of transportation. Last week, comming
    home from Oshkosh, I got to try it.
    	The island is small, 8 miles of shore road gets you all the
    way around it. Even on a summer weekday, the roads are crowded
    with 5 mph bicyclists and horse drawn buggies (cars are not allowed
    - it's not like Bermuda, where visitors can't rent cars, there are
    no cars or trucks on the island at all [they may hide an ambulance
    somewhere]).
    	We tend to forget how messy roads are when used by a lot of
    horses - horseshit and piss Everywhere! I've got processed hay
    in the groves in my front tire and a fine coating on my bottom bracket.
    I'm not going back until they convert to solar or electric power
    for their transport. (I did bring back some of their fameous fudge.
    But you can also get it from the same outfit's Martha's Vineyard
    ourlet.)
    	The best part of the outing was the ferry ride. The Star Line
    has slow boats. 1/2 of Arnold's boats are slow, 1/2 are the fast
    Diesel Catamarans. I think Shepler's boats are Cats too, cuz they
    blew the doors off the Arnold Cat that I came back on.

811.2Autos- the pollution solution;-)MIST::IVERSONa Brubeck beat in a Sousa worldMon Aug 08 1988 19:2814
    re .0 ~ horse pollution

    I once read a reprint of an article from when cars were first being
    commercially developed in which they were being pushed as a "pollution
    solution" to replace *horses* which were considered a *major* pollution
    (and source of road destruction) problems for cities. This was
    obviously written before they had enough cars on the road to discover
    smog:^)

    It is interesting to note that horses are allowed into Wilderness
    areas, but high impact, polluting bicycles are not;^). Its all a
    matter of the perceptions of the status quo.

811.3Where is this place???CSDPIE::EDGERTONMon Aug 08 1988 20:262
    So just where is this Makinak island anyway? I've never heard
    of the place. Is it down by Martha's Vineyard? Or in Maine?
811.4Its in Michigan!UMBIKE::KLASMANMon Aug 08 1988 20:554

I believe its between the lower section and the upper peninsula of Michigan.
Probably in Lake Huron.

    	The Mackinac bridge links the lower part of Michigan to its
    "upper pininsula". If you look to the East as you crest the bridge,
    you'll see Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. (Lake Michigan is to the
    West.)  - Chris
