1853.0. "Television (TV) programs" by MOVIES::WIDDOWSON () Fri Feb 22 1991 11:00

    (Mod please move this note if needed - I did a dir/tit=tv and
    /title=tele but couldn't find anything)

    Did anyone in the UK catch the BBC2 program on cycling last night. I
    saw the last few minutes which hyped Lemond a bit (and admittedly he
    has one something for the sport) and had several minutes of cross
    bitching between Merkx ("A great champion is expected to be there in
    the Classics") and Lemond ("He's just bitching because my bike sales
    are cutting into his in the states, anyway there are at least 3 people
    of Merckx's stature in the peleton these days and he was only great
    because he started training during the winter") - The bias in reporting
    these comments is entirely mine.

    I'd appreciate a fuller report, and a judgement as to whether it woiuld
    be worth watching next week.

    Arrrgh, so I missd it! You didn't video tape it, did you?
    Or did you see it in fact? So what day is the next broadcast?

1853.2I caught it!!!BRUMMY::DONNELLYFri Feb 22 1991 14:158
    It was a 20 min program in a series of five. I taped it but have
    decided not to keep it as it was o.k. but a bit general. Each
    week covers a topic and this was about the Tour. General stuff
    on the Origins of the Tour , Tommy Simpsons demise a bit on the
    Tour De Trump. Next week is the Evolution of the Bicycle.

    	Cheers Dave.

    ESPN is showing mountain bike races from various tracks mondays at
    5pm... the show is at least one hour long, maybe longer...

1853.4TV mountain biking = zzzzzzzzz!PLAYER::GWYNNEFri Oct 11 1991 06:439
    Eurosport has been showing mountain bike racing for some time now. I'll
    have to admit, though I own a mountain bike and I love watching Tour de
    France etc on the TV, mountain bike racing is very boring to watch. I
    think it may be because the camera lens tends to flatten out the
    terrain, and you don't get a real idea of how steep/rough some of these
    tracks are.

    i'll agree with you that the terrain does seem flatter on television...
    the same thing happens to pictures i've taken of myself and friends
    skiing. here we are on tuckerman's ravine.. and it looks like a bunny
    slope!

    BUT... the show is still good. there are interviews with riders and
    they show some pretty radical bikes. Rock Shoks front *and* rear!
    anyway, each week they go to a different course. last week was mostly
    sandy.. pretty boring to watch the men (woman raced first, i missed
    them) plow thru it. most of the guys had to dismount and run thru, but
    one european had the technique and rode thru the sand really well.

    i dunno bout you, but when it was over i had to jump on my bike and go
    ride...
