    PS - I've been asked to join a group of PMCer to discuss ways to

    the application came through the mail. Billy Starr has done a great
    job in making it a fun weekend.

    This will be my first year. It's a little difficult getting in on the
    action due to the unique rules of having the money up front. I wish
    this could change ........ But I believe in this cause enough to do
    what I have to to get the funds in on time. Anyway, I'd love to be
    one of those folks with the distinctive DEC jerseys at the end. I know
    that I'll finish ..... I don't have a DEC jersey though. If anyone
    has a source for them, Please let me know. See you all in "Ptown".

    	I was considering doing the PMC this year for the first time.
    But the $100 upfront and $700 in pledges is keeping me out, including
    the fact the rider is held accountable for people who pledge and then
    do not follow thru.
            I know other riders who feel the same way. It certainly
    is a good cause but the cost to the rider should be what ever she/he
    pledges along with the additional pledges brought in.

    Re: .5

    I know how you feel, $800 is a lot of shekels... But you have to look
    at it from the other side, the PMC team really put on a class weekend.
    I was VERY impressed. Billy Starr, the director (and the guy who
    started it all) really breaks his b*tt to keep costs down (over 90%
    goes to the Dana-Farber) and space is limited. Imagine opening it up
    to riders who comes up with $10 or even $100; you would have thousands
    upon thousands of people swarming into Sturbridge. The cost per dollar
    would make it inefficient to run and the Dana-Farber would be the
    ultimate losers (not to mention, the patients).

    I found that collecting the $$ was the toughest part. As a helpful
    hint, ask for pament up front (or a post-dated check) so you don't have
    to chase them around when you are finished. With DEC matching, Nancy
    and I (tandem) were able to collect over $5400 ($2400: DEC employees;
    $2400: DEC matching; rest: non-DEC contributions).

    I hope that you reconsider and sign up. It will be a lifetime memory.

    This is my first year

    I've watched it go by our house at the Cape for years. I'll be riding
    with a friend of mine whose 1 1/2 yr old daughter had cancer and is
    very committed to and thankful to the Jimmy Fund.

    It's not hard to raise the money ,

    I was wondering how the DEC match worked. Do you have people pay
    you and then you claim the total donation and get it matched or
    do you process individually ?

    Re: .7.

    The way that I will do this year will be a little different (and less
    painful) than last year. When you ask for a pledge from a DEC
    employee, get their badge number and also ask if they would like to pay
    at that point (accept a post-dated check for mid-August if they don't
    have the $$). The checks should be made out to PMC - Jimmy Fund. By
    asking ahead of time will relieve you from having to track them down
    afterwards... If you get money of a non-post-dated check, send it to
    PMC so that they can benefit from it NOW (and you don't have to worry
    about loosing it).

    Once your list is complete, make another list of all DEC contributors.
    The list should contain their name, badge and amount - with a total at
    the bottom. Fill out 1 matching gift form. Send all that stuff to the
    PMC ($$, contribution form, DEC list and matching gift form). That's it!!

    One problem that I ran into is that DEC will not process a matching
    gift over $1000. If you anticipate getting more than that, fill out
    enough forms so that none exceed $1000. You will need to use one of
    your DEC contributor's name on each of the other forms. This will not
    affect their matching gift benefit as you are allowed to have DEC match
    up to $1000 per year PER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION. They would not be able
    to have DEC match another donation to PMC - Jimmy Fund during that year
    only.

    If this is not clear, you can contact me at DTN 227-3969

    The time for the 1991 Pan Massachusetts Challenge is quickly
    approaching: August 9 and 10. We are asking for your sponsorship.

    Last year, thanks to your support and Digital matching funds we raised
    over $5400. This year, we hope to surpass that level of contribution.

    The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge benefits the Jimmy Fund and the
    world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The ride is in its 12th
    year. In 1990, the PMC raised $1.3 million for the Jimmy Fund - 92% of
    all donations received. The PMC is the largest single benefit for the
    Jimmy Fund and is the largest cycling fund-raiser in the world.

    The ride is from Sturbridge to Provincetown, 192 miles in a weekend.
    We spend Saturday evening in Bourne at the Mass Maritime Academy. The
    finish is at the Provincetown Inn. The PMC ferry back to Boston
    carries only riders and volunteers. And no matter how tired people
    feel arriving in P-town, dancing the entire trip back to Boston is the
    norm.

    Cycling with 900 other people who are each doing what they can to
    contribute toward cancer research is an overwhelming experience. The
    ride is a lot of fun - but it's hard work, too. There is a tremendous
    spirit of camaraderie, outreach and personal commitment. Riders of all
    ages, shapes and abilities, riding all forms of bicycles, participate.
    Especially in the last 40 miles, through the hills of Wellfleet and
    Truro and into head winds approaching P-town, riders push on with
    thoughts of people who have had the spirit to fight cancer with
    determination and dignity.

    The vision of PMC riders and the Dana-Farber is to win the ultimate
    battle against cancer. Help us move closer to achieving that vision.

    Please sponsor us for the 1991 PMC. An added bonus: sponsors of $50
    or more receive special thanks - a personalized jar of honey direct
    from Eric's bee hives.

    Let's see how do I say / ask this???

    Sherron Benoit at 'corporate' is trying to get the OK to 'donate' the
    use for 3 DEC van to the PMC for the weekend. The only problem is that
    corporate require DEC employees to drive them.

    If anyone is interested in being a volunteer to drive a van please
    contact Sherron at dtn 296-4271.

    From what she said the PMC does not have ANY van at this time.

    What would the vans be used for? By describing it's use, it may be
    easier to convince people to donate their time. Would it be for the
    weekend?  What about accomodations?

    I don't have any details as to how the vans would be used and I'm not
    sure if Sherron would know for sure either. I have not heard whether
    their use has been approved yet either.

    The best I could do is to guess they would be used for support of some
    sort.

    If anyone is interested Sherron would have the best info from the DEC
    side.

    Sorry for the lack of info.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
	Good morning!
	Yesterday, Sunday, Dec. 8th the PMC held their check presentation.
	The presentation included the acknowledgment of the "Heavy
	Hitter's" speeches by various dignitaries and viewing of the 1991
	video, which ended with the announcement of the amount WE raised.
	This years Pan-Mass Challenge presented the Jimmy Fund with a
	check in the amount of $1.55 million.  Loretta and I were pleased
	to contribute over $5,100 towards that total thanks to your support.
	AND!!! Mark your calendar!  The video/documentary will be aired
	DEC 26th at 7:30 on WCVB, channel 5 (in place of Chronicle).
	Watch for it!  I think you'll enjoy it and you will see what your
	support means.
	Although, in the coming year, Loretta will not be joining me as
	a rider, she will be volunteering her services to the '92 ride.
	BUT, I won't be 'alone'.  As my brother Mark has committed to
	ride with me in memory of our brother Steve.
	On behalf of the entire Brightman family, Loretta & I would like
	to thank you for your support, past, present and future.
					Sincerely,
					Tim
