2102.0. "Non-TIME shoes for TIME pedals" by ICS::WARD () Fri Oct 04 1991 11:16

    Are there other shoes that are compatible with TIME pedals?
    The TIME pedals are excellent, but I can't get my left foot
    comfortable in the TIME (Sport) shoe. I've tried a larger
    size but it's too big. Dr. Scholl's arch supports didn't
    help much either.

    I know you can get adapters so that LOOK-compatible shoes
    work with TIME pedals, but I've heard that they don't work
    very well. What do other people think?

      Carnac sells "Time shoes" that do not need the adapter.

    Great! I'd like to try a pair. Do you know where they're sold?

2102.3EVER SEE A JACK-A-LOPE?WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Oct 08 1991 13:5910
     Please explain Norm... I have both TIME and LOOK pedals and shoes
    (on different bikes, of course... No wait, maybe there's something
    here)...

     Any, I digress. There is no possibility of engineering miracle that
    I can see that would allow a cleat to fit both LOOK and TIME pedals.
    It ain't the shoe, it's the cleat. The cleats are so radically differ-
    ent I can't see how they something could work on both...

    Chip,

    I believe the replies described a purely TIME-oriented shoe,
    rather than one that would work with the LOOK system. Carnac
    (French company) is apparently a well-known, well-reputed shoe
    company and TIME has licensed them, as I understand it. In fact,
    if I remember correctly, the "real" TIME shoes may be made by them.
    (Read this recently in an article.)

    So the issue in .0 seems to be: "How can I get shoes that fit my
    feet better, yet work well on TIME pedals?" Maybe the Carnac
    will do the trick.

      The only place I know of that sells Carnac shoes is Branford bike
    in conneticut. They are advertised in thier catalog at $149.

    Working nights = delay in response.

      Carnac makes a shoe that only works with Time pedals. With an
    adapter they can be made to work with Look style pedals. They also
    make Look only shoes.

      The Branford Bike catalog carries the Carnac Fancy ($179.88). They
    say to state wether you want the Look or Time model.

2102.7Right shoe, wrong pad?BOOKIE::CROCKERWed Oct 09 1991 16:4126
    Don't give up on foot fit.

    A lot of European companies seem to have fallen for the myth that all
    Americans have sledge-hammer feet. Not true in my case, and when I
    finally switched to clipless, I almost missed finding a shoe that
    would fit properly.

    I finally wound up with Look Carbons, after I made a trip to one of
    those monster sports equipment outlets (I forget the acronym) and
    found some synthetic pads that are from 1/4 to 1/2" thick. With
    an X-acto knife and some sandpaper I was able to shape myself a
    $20 pair of orthodics that not only make the shoes fit, they make
    them *comfortable*.

    Nobody seemed to mind my trying the different types of pads until I
    found the one that fit (the red cross-training version; I forget the
    brandname) except for squunching my toes a little (that's where the
    knife came in later, on the pad, not the toes).

    I've ridden in this setup for 12,000 miles with no problems. The
    pads are so thick that I can stick my car key underneath when I don't
    have any other place to carry it, and not feel a thing.

    So maybe you've got the right shoe, but haven't found the right pad
    yet. Even with the money for the pads, the Time Sport would be a
    good deal more economical than the Carnac, right?
2102.8I'll get out my knife and experiment!ICS::WARDThu Oct 10 1991 11:5217
    re:2102.07
    That's an interesting point. What's frustrating about this is that
    I think the TIME shoes are good and I have no problem at all with
    the right foot (which is a bit smaller). Yet when I tried on the
    larger TIME size for the left foot, it still didn't feel great. An
    orthotic might work if it would keep the foot from rubbing against
    the front right of the shoe. Shoe stores have pads that attach to
    the tongue of the shoe and that might keep the foot in position.
    As it is, the big toe and and right side of the left foot start
    hurting at about 40-50 miles.

    I'll experiment with inserts of some sort. Beats paying $179 for
    shoes that may be very much the same!

    Thanks,
