405.0. "Stephen Roche wins" by AMUN::CRITZ (Ya know what I mean, Vern) Mon Jul 27 1987 14:47

    	I watched the conclusion of the Tour de France yesteday
    	on CBS. Roche looked like he'd had it after that last
    	section of mountains. He came back, though, and won
    	for the first time. Also the first time for an Irishman,
    	I believe.

    	The French are probably pretty happy, because he married
    	to a French woman and lives near/in Paris.

    	I thought the coverage was pretty good. Final stage won
    	by an American from the 7-11 team. Otherwise, the Americans
    	didn't do too well. I guess I expected more out of Hampsten
    	and maybe Alcala.

405.1Which one?NAC::CAMPBELLMon Jul 27 1987 17:357

    Which American won the final stage???? Was it Alcala?? He seems
    like a pretty good hope for the future. I wonder what him, Hampstead,
    and Lemond could do on the same team? Sounds like a good combo!

405.4Ireland at a standstillDUB01::OSULLIVANTue Jul 28 1987 07:5118
    Stephen Roche came home to Dublin yesterday, and got a hero's welcome.
    A quarter of a million people lined the streets to cheer him on
    the eight mile run from airport to city centre. The newspapers were
    fully given over to cycling yesterday. For those of us (only 3000)
    involved in the sport here , it was quite an emotional day, one
    we never thought we would see.

    Next stop Austria. Kelly for the Worlds !

    Re .1 One to watch for the future.... Greg Orvitz , a Californian
    based in France rode our amateur Tour of Ireland (Ras Tailteann
    in Gaelic) and won the points classification. Could have won the
    whole show but for some strange team tactics. He was very impressive
     watch for the name.

    	The French may want Laurent Fignon to win, but he'll have
    	to watch those descents. I still can't figure out how the
    	bike ended up in the trees and he remained on the ground.

405.6Mexican, but not a wetback!!TALLIS::DICKThu Aug 06 1987 18:475
    Everyboby is making the same mistake. Raul Acala is a Mexican riding
    for the 7-11 team, he's not an American. At any rate he has been
    doing a good job for a rookie. I expect to see him do well in the
    Coors Classic too.

    I got the impression that Laurent Fignon had gone over the guardrail
    with the bike and ended up in the trees. He climbed out and was
    standing there laughing trying to figure out how to get the bike
    out. He went on to win that stage! The man has BIG ones!

    I taped the show, and my VCR is sick, so if anyone near LTN wants
    to borrow it, send mail.

    RE: .6

    If you tell a Latin American that he is not "an American" because
    he is not from the U.S., you let yourself in for a speech on U.S.
    arrogance. They can be quite touchy and won't excuse it as "just
    semantics."
