2953.0. "Fires in Rocky Woods, Milford, MA." by NODEX::CLBMUD::mcgreal (Pat McGreal 297-2285) Wed May 10 1995 16:04

	Some of you may have heard about big brush fires in Milford
	Mass. in an area called Rocky Woods (AKA Vietnam for all you
	MTB-heads). These fires (3) required intervention from the Forest
	Service and many surrounding towns fire depts. to combat.
	Helecopters were used to drop large buckets of water (300 gals)
	since the fires were in a remote section. Over 150 acres were
	burned.

	A friend and I rode the Vietnam area this morning and didn't
	encounter any burned out areas. It appears that the damage was
	some distance east of the most popular riding area. WHEW!

	The Milford fire dept. believes that because of the remote
	location of the fires that they were likely intentionally set.

 My wife and I were biking in this area about 2 weeks ago. The part of the
forest we were riding we came across trees that had chared burn markes on them.
These trees were not in one big burned out area. They were all over the place.
A couple here a couple there. They did look like somebody had to intentionally
set these trees on fire. I don't think it gets that hot and dry here that they
would burn on there own.
 Pretty cool ride there. Why is called vietnam????????

2953.2There is a sign.PCBUOA::REHBERGTue May 23 1995 21:574
    Other than the sign on the tree that says Vietnam, I am not exactly
    certain. Before all these fires it may have had dense under story
    growth, aka jungle-like??

2953.3Because it's jungle likeNODEX::CLBMUD::mcgrealPat McGreal 297-2285Wed May 31 1995 16:219
	I had a chance to meet the guys who cut most of the trails
	and who supposedly put the sign on the tree.

	It's jungle like in there with a reasonable amount of canopy.

	What a place to ride though. It's great!
