3192.0. "patches by the hundred?" by PCBUOA::KRATZ () Fri Mar 21 1997 18:41

    Does anybody know of a place (GMA or mail order) to buy bulk volume
    of patches, like on the order of 100? The 99 cent patch kits are
    fine for the 6-8 patches, but I've ended up with quite a collection
    of unused glue tubes and sandpaper. The smaller nickel-sized patches
    would be preferable.
    Tanks,

    I would look in the back of some of the more popular rags for
    adds.

    I am pretty sure there is an outfit that advertises regularly in
    Bicycle USA. I just got mine over the weekend so I'll try and remember
    to check it out tonight.

    Talk to your shop - if I recall correctly, Quality (parts wholesaler
    that many shops deal with) carries Ream patches in bulk. You can also
    get just tubes of glue. The shop I go to let me look through the
    'customer' catalog (no prices) to see what was available.

3192.3The Third Hand (somewhere in CA i think)EDSCLU::NICHOLSTue Mar 25 1997 12:426
The Third Hand Carries that sort of thing. I dont remember the quatity
I got, but it was something like 50. There primarily tools, but have
small parts (cables, bearings, etc) too. Sorry, dont have a phone number
handy, but I try to remember to look at a catalog tonight....

    Folks need that many patches because:

    A. It's always prudent to follow the preventative maintenance procedures
    for flat avoidance by pre-patching your tubes in strategic locations in
    the event of future flats.

    B. When applying patches, you should apply another patch opposite the
    one you are applying originally to keep the wheel balanced.

    C. By adding several patches to your tubes you can increase the
    rotational mass of your wheels which is good for training rides. Make
    sure you switch back to your unpatched tubes for racing. You might
    also wish to switch to the lower density summer air at the same time.

    D. They are budding BMTs and always want to be seen as the helpful one
    when on group rides.

    OK... perhaps creating the trail thru the rasberry patch at the
    bottom of the backyard wasn't one of my more stellar ideas.
    BUt there's never been more than TWO levels of patches!

Wow! She's riding a real antique if she has solid tires!
