3189.0. "4/6 Marlbehead" by WMOIS::GIROUARD_C () Mon Mar 17 1997 08:56

Anyone going to Marlbehead? I haven't done this race for the past two
years, but will be there this spring. Finished in a pack sprint, maybe
    something like 12th.

It's really a puppy of a course. That race is really dictated by the
    field.

I've been warned it is a crash-fest. I'm targeting Otis (4/20) or possibly
Falmouth ME (4/19) as my first real race. For Marblehead, there are only two
fields, "A" for 1/2/3 and "B" for 4/5. The latter is 10x2.2mi=22 miles(65 rider
limit.) The former is 15x2.2=31.2 miles (75 rider limit). March 20 is the
early registration deadline.

Like I said, I haven't been there in two years. I can understan why
it could a crash-fest, however. When I last raced there it was
drizzling. There are about 100 manhole covers on the course and the
road is (was) rough in spots. Then you have that tight corner near
the bridge. Of course, it's early in the season and that doesn't
    help either.

    I didn't pre-register so maybe I'm too late.

I think the reference was mainly to "Picture 65 testosterone-laden bike racers
who haven't been in a pack since September, all itching to go." The fact that
the fields are limited to 65 and 75 means the course probably isn't all that
great (i.e., it can't handle more)

I'm mainly not going because I'm doing (two weeks worth of) new racer training
for NEBC, Sunday mornings, April 6 through May 18. Bedford MA library, 9:30 AM.

Tim

p.s. Did Wells ave yesterday. Fun to be back. Slow pace, 22 mph, 20 miles.
I'm a tad sore today. MORE FUN THAN INTERVALS!!

3189.5I'll be thereHYLNDR::OUELLETTEBuddyMon Mar 17 1997 16:4114
I'll be there, I pre-registered a few weeks ago. It's a short race and close
to my hometown of Peabody. My friends and I are registered for the 4/5 race.

If you drop the registration off in the mail today or tomorrow, you have a
good chance of it getting there by Thursday. If so, I'll be looking for the
Ti machine ;-)

I haven't really decided if I'll stick to the Paramount or bring the new
Mooney. I'm leaning towards the Paramount - it's a short race, anyway, but
it has down-tube shifters. I'll have to de-program myself so I'm not trying
to bend my brake levers!

It ought to be flat enough that you don't need to shift much. Marblehead is
pretty flat, except out at the end. I don't know the course, so it may be
hilly. Don't crash!

Tim
3189.7WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Mar 18 1997 08:516
The course is fairly flat. There is only one climb and it's a
short 20mph'er right after this wicked (almost) 90 degree turn.

I think I may just take the chance when I get there.

Well, the race is filled up and my friend and I were too late (read
    "too lazy").

However, I have already sent for the flyer for the Otis Spring Classic
    down in Falmouth, Ma.

    Anyone done this RR?

    Anyone going?

I guess I'm in, since I haven't heard anything and I sent my application in
quite a while ago. Anyone know where I can get a pair of snow tires?

I was stationed there in '68 before going to SEA. I really doubt there
would be snow. But wind may be a problem. And that would make snow
look easy if I remember correctly. But it has been a long time.

I'm doing Otis...

Great. Maybe I'll meet you. I'm waiting for the flyer in the mail.

Have you done it before? I was just wondering what the course was
    like.

Chip,

The flier is online at

http://world.std.com/~nebikclb/RaceEvents/marblehead_97.html

Having not done it myself, I can't tell you the exact details of the course, but
there are no moutains. Marblehead at the top of cliffs is probably no more than
60-75' to the ocean. The paper flier *might* have a map of the course. It's
probably not too difficult to figure it out from a map of Marblehead. Ain't
that big of a town!

2.2 mi course, 10 laps for "B" (4/5) and 15 laps for "A" (1/2/3). Watch out for
the snow banks!

Tim

Tim, I was asking about the Otis Spring Classic. I've done the
Marblehead race. Watch out for manhole covers (a million of them)
and painted lines. If it's wet (and it generally is), as you know,
    they're a really problem.

The course has only one (what I would call a climb) and it's really
    short.

3189.15TLE::LUCIAhttp://asaab.zko.dec.com/~lucia/biography.htmlThu Apr 03 1997 15:2536
The 4/5 race at Otis is 4 laps x 9.5 mi/lap = 38 miles. See:

http://world.std.com/~nebikclb/RaceEvents/otis_rr97.html

For details. It starts at 10:30 and they run the Juniors and the M35+ fields at
the same time. The two women's fields and the P/1/2/3 field is at 1. I guess
they give us a lot of credit to finish 38miles in 1.5 hours (25.3333 mph).

From the flier:

- Course Description: 9.5 mile ciruit, flat with one minor hill.
- PreRegistration must be postmarked by Mon, April 14. Add $5 after this date.

- Do NOT warmup near Start/Finish and DO NOT approach Rotary near Start area.

It can be windy, and the finish goes through a rotary, according to reports I
have read from previous years. NEBC dominated this race last year, getting 1st,
4th and 6th.

"4/5" means cat 4/5, not April 5, FYI...
