3120.0. "Biking in Magog, Quebec" by QUAKKS::BURTON (Jim Burton, DTN 381-0272) Tue Jul 16 1996 16:48

We took the mountain bikes up to Magog, Quebec last week to try out their
18 km bike trail that runs through the town and surrounding area. Since we
were camping in northern NH, it was not as long a drive as if we had left
from Nashua. The trail varied from a separate bicycle lane on the side of the
road, to a paved asphalt bike trail, to a crushed stone bike trail. It was
a nice ride for road bikes or mountain bikes, but the northern most part of
the trail had some serious hills.

One thing we noticed was that most Canadians were riding on bicycles from
the 60's and 70's. There were very few mountain bikes and the ones we did
see were of department store quality. Many teenagers were younger than the
bicycles they were riding. The red Cannondale mountain bikes my wife and I
have really turned quite a few heads and gathered small crowds when we
stopped for icecream and water breaks. I guess mountain biking has not hit
that area of Canada yet.

Lunch was very nice and very French. I had snails as appetizer and a smoked
meat sandwich for the main course. We bought 6 croissants at a neighboring
bakery and brought them back for breakfast the next morning.

Magog is a little far from Nashua (about 3 1/2 hours), but if you are
spending time in northern New England, it's well worth the trip. There was
no problem crossing the border either way with the bikes.
