3085.0. "MB after work in Acton area?" by PCBUOA::LPIERCE (The Truth is Out There) Wed May 15 1996 19:28

A group member here in AKO/Acton, MA (John Scola) is looking to MB ride
after work with 1 or more other MB riders. If you interested pls give
him a call at DTN 244-5253 or send him mail to PCBUOA::SCOLA.

3085.1Leaving from Acton at 6pmENQUE::MCGOWANMon May 20 1996 15:2111

As you may have noticed, both working in Acton and reading through
the recommended MA ride locations in the MTB Conference, there are
not a lot of places in Acton to ride. I live in Acton and have
found one or two places useful for a short ride or circuit training
but not much in the way of cruising sround. You're welcome to join
a bunch of use that ride Tuesday evenings and Saturday morning
every week and Thursay evening or Sunday evening if the urge hits.
Note that we are not racers, we just tool around and enjoy the
singletrack, technical sections and bitchin' climbs.

There's actually miles and miles of trails behind AKO thanks to
an abandoned RR track and Bob's Horse Rides; certainly enough to
get lost on (been there, done that...). Rick Rehberg also mentioned
that he crossed Rt 27 and got lost on a bunch of trails over there.

Possible ways to get in there:
    - cut thru the horse farm
    - a trail off the culdesac down from AKO
    - the end of a subdivision road just north of (and on the other
side of the road) from Nashoba ski area

(head down in shame) Guess I didn't look hard enough eh? Can anybody
comment on skill level required for these trails, i.e. are there any
challenging sections, or can you cruise it?

The stuff behind AKO is generally good for cruising. Nothing too steep
or long. There are some spots with really deep sand. Now, that's a
challenge to get through. The area is relatively flat unless you wander
over to Nashoba Valley Ski area and climb it and then bomb back down
again. We got as far as the subdivision from AKO and saw many, many
trails heading off into every direction. I don't think the horse ranch
likes mountain bikers on their trails though. Did not get chased off
but when we inquired as to how to get to the pond etc. we were told the
best way was out on Rt. 110.

3085.6Behind AKO1PCBUOA::aki1005.ako.dec.com::rehbergTue May 21 1996 17:0012
Behind AKO1 there is one hill that is a lot of fun!

Going through the woods past, on past the old athletic club, out onto 27
going north for a short distance one comes to a conservation area on the
other side of 27. This area is fairly extensive, not very hilly. You can
cruise some of it. Some of it has some interesting rocks & roots and there
can be some excellent mud.

Have fun!

Rick

I just thought of another possible area. It is off Nagogg Hill Road.
There are conservation areas on either side of the road. I have been XC
skiing there and it was fun but I have not taken my MTB there yet. Has
anyone been riding there?

I leave Acton heading to wherever we're riding at ~6. Rather than
meet at a usual place then go to where we ride, we meet at the
place we're gonna ride. All the usual places, a brief description,
directions, scheduled rides, and extimated ride time, are currently
listed in the MTB Conference. The directions are pretty good, but
you're welcome to follow me from Acton if you think they suck.
