3033.0. "Speedplay road cleat covers?" by SWAM1::BURDICK_JI () Mon Nov 06 1995 20:38

Has anyone come up with a good design for covers for Speedplay road cleats?
I love my pedals, and the cleats are fine for walking around on solid
ground, but a walk in the sand or dirt really cruds them up. I would
also be curious to find out what people use to lubricate them as well.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

No covers but you're right, they are a pain.

    I just use WD40.

I use a candle or paraffin, rubbing it onto the contact points. Also easy
to carry in case they get stiff on a ride.

I spoke with Speedplay when they'd been on the market for about a year
and tried to get them to develop a rubber/nylon "pedal" that you could
wear in the cleat when you weren't on the bike. No luck.

So I went to my local Walmart and bought a cheap pair of rubbers that
fit over the whole shoe, cleat and all. Pretty effective, but not
something you want to carry with you on a ride -- so I drilled holes
in the soles and keep them locked to the bike rack at work.

I spoke to a Speedplay rep at last year's Cactus Cup, and he said they
just haven't had time to develop a cleat cover. Maybe a piece of car
intertube rubber around the ball of the foot would work.

I hate wearing rubbers, especially in public.
