     Well, September will be here before you know it!

     So, those of you who really want to experience pain and feel what an
     "out-of-category" climb feels like here's the scoop.

     Date: Sunday, Sept. 10, 1995

     Contact: Cathy Weymss (603) 447-6991

     Note, there is no same day registration and the field is limited to
     400 riders total.

     You must get your applications in A.S.A.P. upon receiving them.

     Hope to see you there!

    yup, once you're on the list they mail them to you... i think they
    show up in June...

2951.5Too easy ;-)ABACUS::JASINSKIMon May 08 1995 11:391
    Yeah, I heard you guys had a 70 mph tail wind.
2951.6SMURF::LARRYMon May 08 1995 14:137
It was a bummer but my friend and I went riding down to to Conway with
a side trip up to the Black Mt. ski area. I remember that it was
a fabulous day and sweating profusely going up the hills and amazed
at how the weather could be so bad just a few miles away!
I'll try again though.

2951.7Can't beat the wind -Can't beat the windBOOKIE::J_CROCKERWed May 10 1995 20:135
    There's enough switchback on Mt. Washington so what's a tailwind for
    a while tends to become a headwind someplace later on the course. I
    look back with fondness on '79 -- warm, sunny, and 1:12 (after 130-mile
    road race the day before -- Mt. Washington used to be a great 2-day
    event).
2951.8WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu May 11 1995 10:1211
    Boy! You can tell you havn't been there for a while! :-)

    Actually, the road changes directions maybe 5 times. In between the
    corners you can be looking at long straight distances.

    Well Justin, you know what they say is the first to go with age... :-)

    BTW, you'd probably need a 50mph tailwind to make a difference on that
    ride anyway.

2951.9NOVA::FISHERnow |a|n|a|l|o|g|Thu May 11 1995 11:315
    maybe you had you're head down too much?

    You really think it changes direction only 5 times?

2951.10WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu May 11 1995 12:569
    most changes are extermely subtle (if you really want to get
    technical).

    how do i know (you ask)? i'm looking at an aerial photograph of the
    Auto Road (poster size) on the wall in my office.

    forgery, maybe? :-)

    yeah, you're prolly right. i ran into the same problem one year. i had
    to walk to one of the car "turn-outs" to re-mount the bike.

2951.13mounting bikes on steep roadsSMURF::LARRYThu May 11 1995 15:384
    I practiced getting on my bike on the steepest section of Miller St.
    park in NH. I was thinking of buying SPD pedals (for other
    reasons) but heard they are
    even harder to mount with than regular road pedal systems.
2951.14NOVA::FISHERnow |a|n|a|l|o|g|Thu May 11 1995 15:544
    wow, you managed to do it in that last 600 ft? Color me

2951.15WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu May 11 1995 15:586
    me too! i couldn't even get close to getting on at Mt. Wash!

    they obvious solution = do not get off!

    My brain agrees with the dont get off the bike philosophy ... just
    have to convince the rest of my body. I think I can, I think I can,
    I think I can ...   ;-) Larry
