2930.0. "Windows Ride Software?" by EVMS::E_SMITH (Ed - DTN 381-1451 - OpenVMS AXP/VAX Verification Group) Thu Apr 06 1995 01:22

I scanned for notes on Cycling software and found some pretty old
notes (2 years). Does anyone know of any newer Windows software for
tracking rides? Or perhaps an Excel spreadsheet?

I have been thinking about writing something simple (Windows based) for
my own use. Perhaps we can get some ideas about the types of things people
would like to track and I may be able to create something that I'll share.

Reply to this note and list what you would like to track, what types
    of reports you want, etc.

2930.2The Athlete's DiaryHYLNDR::OUELLETTEBuddy OuelletteThu Apr 06 1995 14:0727
I've been using a demo version of "The Athlete's Diary" I got from the
WWW Bicycle Lane at http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/dole/bike.html

I've tried the Ridelog program, but like the Athlete's Diary much better.
It allows you to log other activities in addition to cycling and has some
very versatile graphing capabilities, as well. For example, you can graph
data on any particular keyword you assign values to and consistently use
in the comment field (you make up any keyword you want - temperature, weight,
pulse, etc.)

Also, I like to just add my average speed and total distance I read from my
cycle-computer and it figures out the total time OR you can specify the
time and distance and it will calculate the average speed. It is a very
well thought out program with a good windows GUI. I've been running it on NT
and I have not encountered any bugs.

The demo version allows up to 25 entries. If you decide to buy it, I believe
the cost is US$49.99. Well worth it, in my opinion.

I, too was thinking of writing one myself, but this has everything I would
have implemented in my own version and more that I never thought of, but
find nice to have.

Try it, I think you'll like it.

well, i don't have a PC, just a VMS VAXstation 3100, I only have access
to 2020 as a spreadsheet. i just set up a 2020 spreadsheet with the
    following heading:

DATE	ROUTE	MILES	TOTAL MILES	TIME	AVG SPEED

Until earlier this year, I had access to a testing system on which Dave
Perez had written a neat RIDELOG program in RALLy. But since DEC took
    the hardware away ....

If someone here wrote something, I'd like to see the following items
    tracked:

DATE, ROUTE, MILES, TOTAL MILES, TIME, AVG SPEED, PARTICIPANTS ON
RIDE, COMMENTS, WEATHER (TEMP, CONDITION[sunny, rain etc...])
2930.4Here's what I had/have may have again...ANGLIN::PEREZTrust, but ALWAYS verify!Thu Apr 06 1995 18:4242
Like Ann, I was tracking rides in the Rally program I wrote. It also
had a few graphs and reports you could generate from the Rdb database
using Teamdata and Rally. BUT, until my 3100 gets back on the network
    that isn't usable.

BUT, I've been working on something similar using MS Access on the PC
at home - not working very hard unfortunately, but at least I've
thought about what I think it should do...

Here's what I'm trying to do...

    1. Provide a simple screen for a rider to enter the following:
    	Date and time of ride
Type of ride (I differentiated between casual rides with my wife,
training when I actually tried to do something, tours where
I was carrying junk or cameras and goofing off,
    	Distance of the ride
    	Average speed of the ride
Duration - actual elapsed time of the ride (as opposed to the
saddle time calculated by distance and avg speed)
Weather Code - Sunny, Cloudy, raining, etc.
    	Temperature
    	Wind Speed
    	Wind Direction
Course Code - refers to a description of the course
Other Riders - Was I alone or whoever was along
Comment - Any old comment about the ride...

Values like Course Code reference a separate table that has a list of
descriptions. That way if I had a course I did frequently, I only had
to put in the description once.

Several of the bits captured were for graphical purposes. I could
generate a graph that showed the effect of ride temperature on
distance, or Wind Speed versus average speed.

I'm hoping to do a similar thing in Access, and hopefully I'll be able
to get useful charts, things like a comparison of last year's mileage
from start of season to current date versus this years. Or the same
for average speed for each category of ride. Etc.

Can anybody think of anything else to capture?

I like to have start time, finish time, and trafic (heavy, light,
comuters, older women, etc.). I also track temp. at the start
and finish along with the general weather conditions. As well as some
    of the others already mentioned.

Thanks for the pointer to the "The Athlete's Diary". I'm downloading
    it now.

I guess I after something pretty simle that can be used to keep track
on miles, average speed, trip time, etc. Basically the data from my
cycle computer. I'd like to be able to graph my performance and miles
to see how I doing month to month and at the end of the year graph up a
    summary.

    Thanks,

well that got me to thinking. I've been using the spreadsheet in
PFS:WindowWorks to keep all my data now. It has a chart function as well
as the spreadsheet (and a database). Maybe if I can think it through
and stay awake long enough I can use the spreadsheet data to build
charts to give me a visual of just how bad I'm doing each week or
month. Then I could post it up above my computer and that would remind
me to ride instead of fool around with this PC. But first I'd have to
get out the manual and mess around with trying to find out if it can be
done and how to do it (and I'd have to learn PFS too.) so maybe I'll
just go riding instead. It is a nice day finally.
