2899.0. "Specialized Epic ???" by SWAM2::BURDICK_JI () Mon Jan 09 1995 03:10

Does anyone have any experience with the Specialized Epic carbon fiber
frame? I am about 200 lbs. and ride 20-40 miles, with an occasional
century. I am looking for the utopian blend of stiffness on climbs,
great acceleration and handling, and comfort. Any opinions on whether
this bike would fit the bill? Might also consider Trek 2300, Giant
CFR-1, or maybe even stick with steel.

Thanks. The people in this conference have been tremendusly helpful.

No, I don't to answer your first question. I know someone who's got one
and he likes it. On the other hand he's quite light and you, um,
aren't, and I've also heard suggestions that that bike while light is
    not superstiff.

What seems to be a good buy for the larger rider is oversize alu, such
as Cannondale. I weigh about 180lb and recently bought an oversize alu
frame and it turns out to have a great ride: stiff and powerful, but
not killing to the backside. Perhaps you should investigate that
    avenue?

Thanks for the suggestion. I wound up ordering the EPIC frame last
week. Specialized is probably going to discontinue it, so they are selling
the frame, fork and headset for $350. At the price, I couldn't refuse.
It felt stiff enough around the bottom braket, and really absorbed the
    shock compared to my CroMo.
