2839.0. "Abort, Retry, Ignore, ?" by LUDWIG::ASMITH () Wed Aug 31 1994 16:51

     Many times my curiosity gets the best of me and I'll might just burst
if I don't try to satisfy it. So here goes. Does anyone know what has
become of the bicycle racer Susan Elias? At one point she WAS PROBALY one
of the top three female racers in the US but she just sort of vanished from
the scene, abruptly. The last time I saw her name in print was about 2-3
years ago, she was helping Betsy King with a cycling camp somewhere in
West Virginia ( I think most of King's camps are now in Gainesville, Fl
).
     I had a chance to watch Elias race in person once, she did the Fitchburg
, Ma Crit and destroyed the field. Does her disappearance have anything to do
with the small purses that female racers get?

 { OPINION ALERT : Those of you who think that I am opinated should not read
                   beyond the line }

     One can't eat socks, shorts and bike tires ( the rewards that women get
for winning races ). Cycle racing is probaly the most regressive sport on the
face of the earth as for as gender equality is concerned ( professional golf
is probaly the best, at least in the US ). It seems that the day when women
fully control how athletic sponsorship money is spent is slowly approaching,
as a guy I dred the earned hell that will have to be paid when that happens.

    <- Hey, I agree that women are virtually ignored (also agree with
       the exception of golf - but would add tennis and even bowling).

       While inequality exists in college sports $'s allocations, I think
       the risk of equality here is minimal since men's athletics is the
       space generating the majority of the revenue. Regardless, the women
       are (probably) still be treated unfairly. Until there ROI increases
       (or wealthy alumni) women in college will remain relegated to the
       surplus/crumbs left over from other programs.

       NOTE: No offense meant to women in the audience.
