2801.0. "Royal, by Raleigh?" by RANGER::GORCZYCA (PATHWORKS/NetWare Product Manager) Wed Jun 22 1994 16:19

Hi,

Entering this note to find any info that may exist (world-wide) for a friend
who is currently working in Europe who has asked about a bike called the
"Royal", built by Raleigh. He also asked about tubing, 708 vs 531, but I don't
have a clue what he's talking about in this regard, but must have to do with
options available for this particular bike.

Any comment would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

FWIW, my first ten-speed road bike was a Raleigh Royale. My father
bought it at Bicycle Exchange (Cambridge, MA) in the late sixties,
    I would guess.

Can't remember much about it now except that it originally had
    Huret derailleurs.

The Raleigh Royale is their second-from-top touring bike. It's still made.
Without knowing exactly I'd guess that the spec would include a frame made
from Reynolds 531st tubing, drop bars, cantilever brakes, down-tube shifters,
21-speed gears with ATB ratios, mudguards and rear panniers, 700c wheels most
likely with 28mm tyres. The frame will have braze-ons for front pannier racks,
water bottles, etc.

Reynolds 708 is a recent introduction to the Reynolds range of tubings and
may, as .0 says, be available as an option. It would probably lead to a
stiffer bike which is worthwhile if you're carrying luggage since bike
handling suffers when there's significant weight being carried on too-flexible
racks.
