2759.0. "RTE. 140 TT '94 BEGINS!" by WMOIS::GIROUARD_C () Mon Apr 25 1994 10:15

     The Rte. 140 TT is on! It will run on Rte. 140 despite the
     construction going on... The course will be shortened to
     a 10 miler. The turnaround will take place at the hot dog
     stand instead of the light at the Rte. 140/12 intersection
     (for those of you familiar with the course).

     I will make every effort to post the top (10) finishes for
     men and women here every week. Ages are not classed.

     The start (and parking) is about a 1/4 mile (on Rte. 140 north)
     after the Rte. 140 and Rte. 101 intersection. We generally park
     on the road that leads to Mt Wachusett CC/Gardner District Court.

     Here are the details:

     Date: Tuesday, April 26th is the kick-off
           NOTE: Held every Tuesday weather permitting

     Time: Register by 6:00pm - Start: 6:30pm

     Course: 10 mi. and is hilly (good training ride)

     Riders: All levels, ages, gender

     Fee: None

     Results: The results are posted at Gamache's Cyclery weekly (usually
              by Wednesday noon) with copies available (free).

     Post TT: It's a tradition to go to Papa Gino's (Timpany Plaza in
              Gardner on Rte. 68) for pizza and drafts...

     Good Luck to all - Man, I love the pain!!!

     Chip

    Chip, since you love the pain so much, I hope I can contribute
    this year! See you at Gardner, May 24. This is a great way to
    spend a Tuesday PM.

    Justin
2759.2WMOIS::GIROUARD_CTue Apr 26 1994 10:1110
     Yeah, drafts and pizza! Oh ya, the TT... :-) I just read an article
     in the local Gardner Snooze (News) that the construction is scheduled
     for completion in July, but no inckling of whether it would be early,
     mid, or late July. If they're on time it would still give us the whole
     of August.

     Ready for battle? Yup... Looks like a washout today (first run). Did
     the same thing last year!

     Chip
2759.3UPDATE - TIMES ON FRIDAYWMOIS::GIROUARD_CWed Apr 27 1994 10:0925
     Well, the first run went off last night. What a turnout! Four, yes 4
     riders showed up. I guess the wimps are full bloom for spring! :-)

     It was cool (you could see your breath), but the wind wasn't bad at
     all. As usual, it was coming out of the west which creates a cross
     breeze for most of the ride.

     I had forgotten just how painful time trialing is until I got to
     the top of the big after the farm. Man, I loved it!!! This was the
     first night I used my (decked-out w/tri-spokes & aero-bars) Merlin.
     The big thing I noticed was the big push I got from tractor trailers.
     They never warbled me on the C Dale like that. Must be the big weight
     difference. It's defintely too early to tell whether the Merlin will
     be as fact as the C Dale was, but it feels good and I'm much lower and
     flatter on the Merlin.

     Anyway, I ran 25.52 for the 10 miles. I didn't write the other three
     times down, but will post them this Friday. I went last and passed
     them so that was the top time...

     Just a side note... While the official date of construction completion
     is July, the contractor believes they have a shot at June and are
     going go for it. Can't wait to get the other two miles back!

     Chip
2759.4NOVA::FISHERTay-unned, rey-usted, rey-adyWed Apr 27 1994 10:464
    I bet they don't have a $220,000/day early completion bonus.
    (like on I-10 in LA).

2759.5WMOIS::GIROUARD_CWed Apr 27 1994 11:435
     Probably not, but in this part of Ma it's amazing that they're even
     talking about being ahead of schedule! Construction around here seems
     to be on the same par as a career...

     Chip
2759.6NOVA::FISHERTay-unned, rey-usted, rey-adyWed Apr 27 1994 12:176
    Cheer up, every biker I've ever talked to from Colorado tells me
    that repaving Wolf Creek Pass IS a career.

     "Big Girl's Blouse"? I'll need a little help with this one. I'm sure
     it's a poke at my masculinity?? :-)

     Funny thing, it does hurt when I laugh. Fortunately, my MD gave me
     some excellent drugs. I should even beable race when taking them! :-)

    It's a quaint, age-old Scottish phrase used to infer that the recipient
    is wimping out and is showing his feminine side... :*)

    A few days after a shoulder separation (comes from tackling mailboxes),
    I asked my doc if it was OK to ride the bike. He said, "Sure, riding's
    no problem if you feel up to it. However, don't fall off for at least
    six weeks..."  ;->

    True story.
2759.15WMOIS::GIROUARD_CThu May 26 1994 12:2910
    I tried to tell my wife that, be she's still freakin'.

    Re; The blouse... Thought so. Here in the states we simply ask the
        the wimp "Where's your dress?"

    Well, that does it! Since I've already sent in my fee for the New
    England Districts (June 12) I'm going to do it. I may not "race"
    the whole 52 miles, but I refuse to wear the "girl's blouse"!

Is that similar to the "puffy shirt" that Jerry Seinfeld had to wear on the Today show?
2759.19NOVA::FISHERTay-unned, rey-usted, rey-adyThu May 26 1994 18:326
    YES, Justin was a cat 2 when the category system was invented.

    Rumors that he was racing bikes when the pneumatic tire was
    invented will be denied.

           week)

           Riders are now going off at 30 sec. intervals due to encroaching

    Interesting year...

    TOTAL RIDERS: 109

    COURSE RECORD: Greg Larkin - 26.28

    TOTAL RIDES: 19

    This year's TT season got extremely fast. A higher caliber of rider
    defintely is showing up.

    The course has dramatically improved with the resurfacing of the lower
    end.

    Not very many ideal conditions this year (weather-wize).

    Looking forward to next year!!!!!!!

    Can you post the final standings? (top 20 anyway with their times?)

    Will do... They're not ready just yet. I usually wait to get the
    "finals" at the TT banquet in October, but I'll see if I can get
    my hands on a sheet this week.

    We had our TT banquet last Tuesday (been out on vacation with my
    grandson for a couple days) and got the yearly roll-up...

    I will only post the top 25 riders times. There were 109 riders this
    year... It was a f-a-s-t year. The overall mean time between 1993
    and 1994 was over a minute lower.

Is there any information on the '95 season yet? We live in New Ipswich, NH.
My husband and son would like to try road racing this year. Any info would be
appreciated.

Also, is there an age limit? My son will be 13 soon...has been racing mountain
bikes for a few years and would like to try road racing.

thanks

Sherry

    The TT will begin either the last week of April or the first week
    of May... (Tuesdays).

    I'll call, get the details and post them. If you're looking for other
    events drop into your local shop. They should be able to help you.
