2757.0. "TREK 1400, 2100, Specialized Allez Comp" by DECWIN::TRNADO::BREAU () Fri Apr 22 1994 12:31

 Hi,

I'm just about ready to purchase a new bike and I'm looking for some advice
to help me with the decision. I'm considering a Trek 1400, Trek 2100, and
a Specialized Allez Comp. All three are '93 models with similar components
  - Shimano 105 (non-STI). I don't have enough experience to really judge
the differences after a short test ride and I certainly can't tell how these
bikes would be for longer (30/50 mile) rides.

I plan to ride about 100-125 miles/week which is what I used to do about 10
years ago so I'm looking for a bike/components that will be both comfortable
and reliable. STI/ErgoPower would be nice, but I'd rather spend the money
on better quality frame, rims, tires...

A few other things to note - I'm about 6'1" and 240/250 lbs, hoping to get
back down to about 190/195 lbs. So if people feel that size/weight is a
major factor then let me know.

Also, some input based on knowledge/experience with these frames/materials
would help, especially comfort and frame life. I've read all the arguments
on aluminum vs carbon (tubes) vs steel. I also wouldn't compare the Allez
steel with high end bikes using SLX, etc.

  thanks,
   bob

    	Bob,

    	I have a 1990 TREK 1400. I currently weigh about 290 pounds.
No trouble with the bike since I've had it. Your mileage may
    	vary, though.

I used to ride a Trek 2300, (sold now) when I bought it I did try
an aluminum frame the 1400 and upted for the 2300. I weight 160lbs.
if that matters. I loved the 2300, my average rides were 20-25 miles
and did 50 + miles a few times.

Wouldn't a steel frame be better for a heavier rider? just curious!

Steel/Specialized vs. Aluminum/Trek?? Well I just read a magazine that
compared a few medium priced road bikes and the Allez Comp. got a
pretty good rating, I don't remember what model the Trek was that they
tested but I'll check it out for you. I am considering buying the Allez
myself and getting rid of my Bridgestone RB-2 if you want to check it
out, I'd be happy to do so. Just a thought.

    Tim,

Is the RB2 the successsor to the RB1? What size is it? What
components are on it? What is the condition?

I think there were reports on the Specialized Allez Comp and the Trek 2200
carbon in a recent issue of one of the biking magazines. Not sure if this
is what you read. If you have some info on the Trek aluminum that would
  help.

    thanks.

2757.6Good deals on Bridgestones for a little whileDECWET::BINGHAMJohnFri Apr 22 1994 17:063
Bridgestone is leaving the U.S. market and there are really good deals on
remaing bicycles, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. Warranty
issues might be a bit of a problem but a deal is a deal.

I ride a trek 1400 and i weigh in at about 235lbs. I love the bike in
all aspects, but i did have to have the frame replaced because off
hairline cracks. The new one seems to be ok. I checked over the notes
file and there were other people who experianced the same thing, most
were over 200lbs. My next bike will probably be steel or ti.

No, 290 lbs (132 kilos) is about right. I, of course, have
not always weighed 290 lbs, but I do now and have for the
last year or so. However, I don't think I'm that hard on
a frame, and I don't do a lot of climbing, so....

2757.13very large jerseys?RCOCER::EDWARDSFri Apr 29 1994 19:2116
While you're still on the topic of "big" riders, can you folks point me in the
direction of a place to purchase cycling jerseys for larger people? A friend of
mine is ~6' 1", 215 lbs. He has one jersey that fits that he has to wash every
day.

We're in Upstate New York so he'd prefer catalog recommendations. If you've
bought good fitting big sized jerseys from Performance or Nashbar or anyone
else, respond with as much detail as possible (size, style, page number in
catalog, etc).

BTW-- I looked for this info in other notes (including the numerous DEC jersey
sagas) but couldn't find it. Feel free to post it somewhere else if more
appropriate.

Thanks!

    RE: Large jerseys

    I am 6' 9" and go a svelt 250 lbs. I found a jersey from Nashbar last
year that fits great. I happened to be in the area of their store in
Needham, Mass and picked up one of their own Nashbar jerseys. Its
their least expensive model, no logos or markings, just a plain old
three pocket lightweight jersey. These come in a tall version and I
got the extra large tall model for about $20.00. It fits great and is
long enought that my lower back is NEVER catching a breeze. I don't
have a catalog with me, but I do believe these are still in the latest
    ones.

Ray, I've had a few jerseys custom made from Flye Custom Clothing (I
think that the name. I know it starts Flye...) Anyway, Martha Hess
is the owner. Call 413-268-7882 and I think she will send a flyer with
a measurement chart and all the clothing she makes. Shorts, jerseys,
    tights, etc.

Tim,

I had Martha make me a custom wool jersey a few years back. It's great!

I'll give her number to my friend. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Re: .0

    In early spring '93 I bought a Trek 2200. I am at 6' 2" and
about 235 lbs. I rode the 2200 all last year and, so far,
all this year and I love it! Be careful though, Trek has
changed the components on the '94 2200s, and IMHO not for the
better! They put lower level Campy shifters on to replace
the Shimano 105 STI shifters. I am a real fan of the '93
    2200s, though.
