2749.0. "MARLBEHEAD RR" by WMOIS::GIROUARD_C () Mon Apr 11 1994 11:20

What a miserable day!!! And the course was nothing to brag about
     either!

Race: Marblehead RR - Marblehead Cycling Club

     Place: Marblehead Neck (ocean)

     Course: 2.2 mile loop * 22 miles (10 laps) for CAT's 4-5

Course Disposition: Pretty flat - one small steep climb

Weather: Rain & Cold & Windy (40-45 degrees)

The day was incredibly nasty. The field was very dangerous as was
the course (due to the rain). The roads weren't very good and has
a lot of corners and (wet) manhole covers. Incredibly, no one went
     down.

The field was 50 riders. The whole field stayed together pretty much
for about 8 laps. We averaged 22mph becuase of traffic. We were held
back twice because cars had gotten in front of our lead vehicle and
wouldn't yield (the idiots) no matter how much the horn was blown...

No really pressed. There were a few attacks - I took off the front for
about a half mile, but the wind cooked me pretty quickly. I was with
maybe 2-3 other riders. We waited for the pack (which wasn't too far
behind). There were a lot of very bad riders in this group. No one
held their lines, many yellow line violations, much weaving, very
     dangerous.

Around the 8 1/2 or 9th lap I looked back and the field had just about
disappeared. There might have been 20 of us left. It seemed like half
     of the field just disappeared!

We came in, and let me tell you, the sprint got really dangerous.
People were just all over the place. I finished between 10th and
15th. I got caught in middle - To be honest, I'm not sure I would've
     went for it anyway.

All in all, I was happy with my performance - First race of the year.
Two weeks is the Miles Standish...

Big Bummer... Driving 3.0 hrs - Racing in the rain for an hour - Going
home and spending 2 hours cleaning the bike!!!!!!

     But I loved it!!!
