2646.0. "Klein Info Requested" by AKOCOA::MOLLIN () Tue Aug 17 1993 17:03

I am considering buying a Klein Performance road bike and would like
to know if anyone has experience with their road bikes. I'm
particularly interested in comparisons that were made before buying
a Klein and if it has lived up to your expectations.

I'm looking at a complete bike that uses a combination of 105SC and
Deore XT components. This gives wide gear ratios using a triple
chainring and the durability of mountain bike shifting system on
a frame geometry designed for long distance racing or fast touring
(paraphrasing their brochure). As I get older and ride farther
distances with hills that seem to be getting steeper and longer,
this combination is very appealing. I do not race or do loaded touring,
although I do commute occasionally. I have done a century in each of
the past two years and will do a 9 day bike tour in Sept., with sag
support. Depending on the terrain and wind direction I average between
15 and 16/mph on most of my rides.

Any comments or suggestions will be welcome, including bike dealers
in the greater Marlboro,MA area that sell Klein.

No personal experience, but I read a review today in a French cycle
magazine of the Klein Quantum (which may or may not bear any relation to
the bike you're considering). They conducted a comparison test of
'superbikes' in various materials, and the Klein represented aluminium.
To give you an idea of the exalted company in which they had placed the
Klein, other bikes included a Colnago carbon-fibre monocoque and the Merlin
titanium Superlight. The Klein was second *cheapest* of six bikes.

Anyway, they liked it (they liked all of them). The Klein scored very highly
on comfort and shock absorption, and on precise handling. It lost out to
some of the others on pure rigidity and performance. Well, those are usually
two sides of the same coin.

I liked the look of the Klein. I'd consider one if I was buying this year...
but I ain't.
