I would like to rent 2 mountain or hybrid bikes so my wife and I
can give this sport a try. Frankly, after reading many notes
here about the advantages of one make/model/etc over another,
I am thoroughly confused and I don't want to even think about
the financial committment of purchasing two bikes until we
rent a couple times.
I live in Milford, Mass and have not yet located a shop in my
area that rents bikes. I enjoy the central ( Quabbin ) area
of Mass as well as the Berkshires so am willing to travel to
those areas to rent, if necessary.
I have heard that within the last couple months, a newspaper
or magazine listed some areas that rent bikes and, at least
in some cases, had trails available. Anyone recall that
article ? Any pointers to shops where I can rent reasonably ?
As a couple novices, we are not looking to rent expensve/exotic
equipment.

I was at the Cape last weekend (W. Dennis) and saw a bike rental
trailer at the head of the Rails to Trails on Rt. 134. They had road
bikes, hybrids and cruisers for rent. The trail is paved 20 miles
through woods, bogs, near ponds etc. I don't know if it's paved for the
whole length (hope not- no fun on a MTB!).

I don't know of any shops that rent bikes but I am sure that
several exist. You may want to call around to several shops in
which are within a reasonable driving distance from you. Some
shops that come to mind are Frank's Spoke and Wheel in Framingham,
Frank's Bicycle Barn in Westborough, and in the Berkshires you
may want to try the Accadian Shop ( their number is in the note on the
Brophie Road race ). A good shop will probaly rent decent old bikes
to you for a reasonable price under the assumption that you will get
hooked on cycling and return to buy bikes. Also, a good shop will
have bikes in every price range and will listen to how much you are
willing to pay and match your desires with good equipment - to be
short, you do not have to spend a ton of money to get good bikes.
By the way, you should look into using helmets even during your
tryout period, cycling is more fun when it is safe - I feel that
helmets greatly increase the safety factor when used as an accessory
to good common sense. You can sterilize used helmets relatively well
by rinsing them.

Try Calling a local bike shop. This is not a plug but Pedal Power in
Acton might help you or Rodger's Ski And Sport Shop in Lincoln NH.
The might rent bikes for the day. Loon Mt rents bike, Sunday River
, Mt Snow. They all have trails for any ability.
