2619.0. "Advice needed on Colorado bike tour." by SMURF::LARRY () Wed Jul 28 1993 13:54

Hi, I'm looking for some route input on my upcoming Colorodo bike tour.
My friend and I will fly into Colorado Springs and Leave from Denver.
The first day we will arrive at noon and cycle to Lake George via rt 24.
The next day we will either ride to Brekenridge via rt 9 or to Leadville
via rt 24. Can anyone tell me which is more scenic and whether one or
the other will have too much traffic for cycling?
After this we will head up towards Steamboat Springs and then
across the Roosevelt National Forest via rt 14 to Fort Collins.
Then its up to Estes Park and some hiking for a day. Up across the
Rocky Mtn National Park to Winter Park, then finally to Boulder.
I think this is the best we can do in 8.5 days of cycling with one
day off. Any comments/suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Larry

All of the routes that you mention are rather scenic. I have cycled most of the
roads that you intend on using and have not usually found traffic to be a major
problem at all. The roads are all in good shape too.

FWIW, There will be some substantial climbs along the way and you will approach
or exceed 11k feet in altitude on some of the passes. Some folks do not need to
but, you may want to consider some time to acclimatize to the altitude.

Be prepared (mentally) for wind. It may not be to bad at all but you may run
into windy conditions. Winds lately have frequently been 20-25+ mph and can
make for some slow riding at times. Also be prepared for cold, wet, and
potential snow. Bring rain gear and warm clothes. Yes, it can show on the
passes in the summer. It did last weekend and on July 4th.

and if lightning is nearby, hit the ditch. More people are killed by
lightning in Colorado than any other natural cause, I've been told.
